Unfortunately, the DSLR’s and phantom power do not play well together.

I’d recommend going directly into an external recorder that handles phantom power then link an output cable into the camera. This way you have a better recording and a secondary in camera recording that may be usable.

Or, attach some aluminum foil to it and raise one leg : )

Final Cut can be used to EQ, but it’s not the best choice. There are other external audio software. If you have the Final Cut suite, then you also have Logic Pro which might be a better choice, I haven’t used it.

Adobe Soundbooth is also a good choice. It ships with the Adobe Suites.

Finally, the standard in the film and recording industry is Pro-Tools. You’ll need some training for this software and it’s not cheap.

October 22, 2012 at 4:14 pm in reply to: COMPACT FLASH or SD CARDS

What produces better quality video CF cards or SD cards?
The cards have nothing to do with video quality. It’s the camera and lenses.

Also does brand matter? Sandisk, PNY? are they all the same? Which is CF or SD CARD brands are best for HD DSLR video?

I’ve been very happy with Sandisk Extreme Class 10, extreme pro or extreme cards.

I’ve used Transcend, but had some issues in the past. PNY may be cheaper, but so is the quality. I’d rather pay a little more for proven brands shooting HD Video.

  • The 5D Mk II and Mk III have a full size sensor. The color can be pushed to a better dynamic range, giving you a better detailed image.
There is a significant difference between these two DSLR and the T1i, 60D or 7D.

You can upRes your edited content for a suitable codec that broadcast companies will accept.

Not sure what settings will help. I’d submit it to Adobe Help for review. Just be detailed in how your workflow is set up.

Some networks work well, but direct from drive is always better. But, I know some post houses have multiple editors working on the same projects and need to share files.

You might have the mic on High DB instead of the Low setting. Are you able to monitor the audio?

  • Welcome to Final Cut! Yup, you need to convert everything to ProRes for a smooth workflow. Otherwise, go out and buy Adobe Premier and edit natively.

You need multiple hard drives, 1-2 TB ea. to handle a lot of media. I have 4 – 1 TB drives. I also use an external docking station to make back-up copies of my original files.

For the fragile equipment, camera & lenses; You should keep them separate from the heavy tripod, etc. gear.

You can buy a suitcase and some pick and pluck foam to have custom spots for your lenses and camera.

Personally, I have a hardshell Pelican that cost a bit more, but it worth it, especially for travel. But for my other video cameras, I bought a nice carry on suitcase from Walmart and lined it with dense foam. It’s worked great and I have extra outer zippers for storage of extra gear.

October 11, 2012 at 2:38 pm in reply to: Recording presentations – not turning out very good

    Mark is right on.

There is also a great program called Camtasia, but it’s not cheap. It lets you capture the screen presentations while you record your voice. You can then have a recording of the computer presentation as a video file as well as your camera shot, giving you two video feeds.

You can also run a feed from the computer into a video recording deck or switcher and do a live switch edit to a recording deck.

I would ask them to help out with the funds. You can also rent cameras, switchers, & recording decks.
