After Effects CS5.5 Performance Issue
Hello,
I am currently using a 27″ imac at work. The specs are as follows:
3.4GHz i7 (4 core)
16 GB ram
1TB 7200 rpm drive
4TB graid attached via firewire
This computer was originally purchased as mainly an editing machine for internet videos. As time passed we have been doing more and more animations in After Effects using 5D video and graphics from illustrator.
In the projects utilizing large illustrator files and pre-comps, my After Effects runs to a halt. It is incredibly frustrating. When I scroll through the timeline I have to wait 15-30 seconds for the image to update. To watch the animations I find it easier to render out a video as opposed to attempt a RAM preview.
My question is, if I upgrade to 32GB of ram, will it improve the in app performance? As it is a work computer, my company doesn’t want to spend a lot of time and money on upgrades. I’m trying to figure out where the bottleneck is, and I’m aware an iMac is not ideal – but it’s what I’m stuck with.
My after effects settings are as follows:
RAM reserved for other apps : 3GB
Installed CPUS 8
CPUs for other apps 1
RAM per background CPU 2GB
Actual CPUS that will be used 5
Disk Cache Size: 20 GB
(cache is located on my desktop drive. Should it be on the external?)
Thanks!
