  • Editing in H.264 and Getting odd hiccups in my edits.

I recently made the switch from FCP7 to PPro. I was told that Premiere can edit in H.264 so I am slowly making a switch right now and still learning the ins and outs of Premiere.

So far I can edit in H.264 with no drop in quality but my question is, is this ideal? Majority of footage I get is from a Canon 7D and some broadcast footage that comes and goes to online streams. So to save myself a night of overnight conversion I might as well try to skip the step as much as possible.

Now the reason why I’m questioning if this is ideal is because I am also getting a weird hiccup in my sytem. I am not sure if it’s because of H.264 or if it is because of our server system. I will edit for like 15-20 minutes with no problem then all of a sudden the video locks up for about 5 minutes. All I can get audio but no video. If I double click another file I will get the Yellow “Media Pending” screen.

    Thanks.

server system? as in shared storage, or just accessing files over the wire?

editing dslr footage straight up works very well in premiere.
    no need for any transcoding.

I believe it is accessing files over a CAT5 Wire.

if it’s gigabit it “should” be enough but
you’d be better off editing footage from a
    local drive.

Not sure what settings will help. I’d submit it to Adobe Help for review. Just be detailed in how your workflow is set up.

Some networks work well, but direct from drive is always better. But, I know some post houses have multiple editors working on the same projects and need to share files.
