Well, I was thinking it would speed up startups and app loading times. Also, wouldn’t it help the OS to run faster with caching? Like when I look in the Activity Monitor it says that my VM is 100 GB in size. I have 16 GB of RAM so I’m not paging out often, but I still wonder how much it could help with the VM caching.

I’ve been running 2 aluminum 24″ ACDs for almost 4 years. They have a very nice sharp image. However, at the 3 year mark they developed bad burn-in after being run for a couple of hours. It’s not too noticeable with Final Cut since the UI is lighter, but with a darker UI like Shake, I get real sick of seeing my emails and Finder windows still visible after switching back into the app (it lasts for a minute or two before disappearing). You’d think the aluminum case would help preserve the image longer, but I guess not.

Premultiplied. I just noticed that when I drag the rendered clips into my FCP Bin, they’re coming in with the Alpha as None/Ignore, and I have to switch it to Straight before cutting into the timeline.

    Thank you Arnie.

Yeah, and another good technique is if you have a longer clip in the timeline that overlaps with a section, say at the beginning of the clip – with a portion of the sequence that is really long to render, and you only want to animate attributes at the end of the clip, just cut the clip near the end so when you make changes to it or disable that clip, it doesn’t make you render out all of the stuff overlayed at the beginning of the clip.

Yep, I’ve been whining about FCP’s function curves and key frame capabilities (the lack thereof) for years. Coming from a 3D background, that just kills me. AE at least has SOME functionality even if the f-curves are wonky.

I’ve all but forgotten about the desire to apply effects to blank tracks. Switching over from Avid, that was one of the hardest things to do without. Also, I miss being able to set in/out in a blank track and then dragging that down and it automatically becomes a slug to trim out parts of other tracks. FCP after setting the in/out, you then have to navigate to hunt down the slug in the FX tab, load it into the Viewer, then make sure that you have the desired track selected before 3-pointing a fit-to-fill to the canvas.

I’d suggest submitting both of these requests via the Feedback pulldown under the FCP Menu. The more requests they get for simple features that should have been added years ago, the more likely we are to actually see them realized.

Another one is not having the ability to click and drag down to enable/disable track attributes, like the track visibility icons in the timeline. I like how fast this is in AE when you need to alter multiple tracks’ mo-blur, hiding, or whatever.

Alright already; lets assume that I had a dream about a friend who is under NDA for a documentary about the psychology of thinking different. And this particular tool happens to be the apex of the story.

Well all if his phrases are still in the rsrc file, so I’m guessing that they just hid him somewhere else again. I’ve not seen him from waiting for a couple of days – I don’t leave my system running at nights/weekends unless I’m here working or rendering, and if I’m rendering he probably disappears by the time that my screens wake up from moving the mouse (I have my screens blackout when left without use for more than 15 minutes because my aluminum 24″ ACDs developed bad burn-in after their third year of use).

Looks like the limit on my system is somewhere between 32,000 and 33,000 pixels; 3.2 octacore w/ 16 GB RAM.

Try this: open Spotlight and do a search for “Capture Scratch” then take all folders and drag them to … open System Prefs, select Spotlight, click the second tab for the exclusion list … this is where to drag the folders. Then repair disk permissions for good measure and now see if you’re still dropping frames.
