What is the max vertical resolution for a .tif importing into FCP? I tried importing a tif 38k pixels tall but it wouldn’t come in – I cut it in half vertically and that came in okay.

    38k? or 38K? 38,000 pixels? FCP has a limit of 4000×4000…4K.

38,000 pixels. I was able to cut the file down to 1280×20,000 and that imports okay. The sequence is only 720p.

Well, I’ve always had issues with stills over 4000K. FAILED TO RENDER errors.

Maybe it’s something that’s been changed in FCP 7, I don’t know – normally I’m working with smaller files. I haven’t exported, but I animated it and it renders in the timeline fine. The only problem I have now is that there’s a maximum value on the position transformation of 10,000 pixels in any direction, so I need to split more evenly, or split into thirds. If it doesn’t export I’ll probably just re-author in AE rather than splitting it into ~15 pieces. Thanks.

the 4000 pixel limitation in FCP is (was?) in relation to SEQUENCES.

you cant create a sequence with a frame size larger than 4000 pixels.

there is no hard, coded-in frame-size limit on images you import.
i have had rollers that have gone way over 4000 pixels high,
    and not had problems.

    oh, and here’s a curio:
if you import a layered PSD file larger than 4000pixels,
it will come in as a sequence LARGER than 4000.
so that is a way to get around FCP’s limit.
seems like asking for trouble to me, though.

Actually there are some guidelines Nick.

Yes – The pixel limitation in Final Cut is for the sequence width settings only and it is hard coded in the sequence settings – the vertical pixel limitation for such a file is with photoshop. I have loaded 2048 x 20,4800 pixels images in for a credit roll in FCP 6

however there is a point where the processing of files with larger vertical pixel aspects are limited by the computer’s CPU / RAM config- the beefier the machine the bigger you can go.

Looks like the limit on my system is somewhere between 32,000 and 33,000 pixels; 3.2 octacore w/ 16 GB RAM.
