  • Cutting and pasting keyframes in FCP

I did well!!! I didnt swear at FCP for over a week!

In Avid it is easy to cut and paste keyframes on effect timelines and even between similar effects placed on different layers. How do I acieve this on FCP though?

Say I have a motion keyframe on V5 and that I want that exact same keyframe on V1, how do I cut and paste it (copying the paramater numbers one by one, as I do now, is painfully slow).

I’m reading manuals like crazy, but pls tell me how you do it as its driving me crazy!

    Thx

Select the clip with the keyframes you want to copy, and hit (Command-C). Then select the clip(s) you want to copy the keyframes too, and Paste Attributes (through the right-click menu, or Alt-V). Select the attributes you want to copy, and they will be applied.
Beware of copying keyframes from images of a different frame size if you are copying scale and position keyframes, as you will get unexpected results. As well, it’s sometimes a little finnicky if the clips are of a different length – the time between keyframes will be different than the original clip.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks Craig – I know that process for a whole clip. I’m after one keyframe at a time (and then pasting that keyframe at the IDENTICAL overal timeline position on a different layer). Then I would apply offsets etc maybe, but it is a really useful technique for moving montages etc.

Can’t do it in FCP. Cannot cut/paste individual keyframes…a much requested feature.

Thanks John- kinda! That is a very big loss. Especially when layering/compositing.

In my experience so far FCP does so many things so much better/simpler/logically/intuitively, but it loses out on far more important things like this and quick in timeline CCR and ability to drop effects on filler/blank tracks (the basis of many a complex transition or overall ‘look’).

    Give me another few weeks!

Yep, I’ve been whining about FCP’s function curves and key frame capabilities (the lack thereof) for years. Coming from a 3D background, that just kills me. AE at least has SOME functionality even if the f-curves are wonky.

I’ve all but forgotten about the desire to apply effects to blank tracks. Switching over from Avid, that was one of the hardest things to do without. Also, I miss being able to set in/out in a blank track and then dragging that down and it automatically becomes a slug to trim out parts of other tracks. FCP after setting the in/out, you then have to navigate to hunt down the slug in the FX tab, load it into the Viewer, then make sure that you have the desired track selected before 3-pointing a fit-to-fill to the canvas.

I’d suggest submitting both of these requests via the Feedback pulldown under the FCP Menu. The more requests they get for simple features that should have been added years ago, the more likely we are to actually see them realized.

Another one is not having the ability to click and drag down to enable/disable track attributes, like the track visibility icons in the timeline. I like how fast this is in AE when you need to alter multiple tracks’ mo-blur, hiding, or whatever.

Yes – I’m still a bit confused by the track ‘patching’ and selection options – seems to be too many buttons! I currently tend to lock tracks so I can work on one definitively. Still need to work this one out/practice more. More importantly…

Is there ANY way to ‘solo’ vision tracks? That is, a way to view one video track only from a complex many layer series of video tracks but WITHOUT losing renders. I must be doing something wrong to get this ‘lose renders’ popup as I build a multilayered looks/effects and render them so as they preview properly… But when they dont quite interact/look as I want, and I need to tweak a keyframe in a layer, I get this ‘lose renders’ issue. Infuriating!

    Thx

You’re not…apparently this is a function of Final Cut…seems horrible, but check out this post that I had some time ago.
