How many use a RAID-0 for their boot drive? My media is on my X-RAID, my Boot Camp Windows install is on another drive, and I backup my system drive to an external with Carbon Copy Cloner. Is there a reason not to do this, e.g. – does software raid for a system drive create issues?

There is no reason TO do this. It won’t speed up your OS significantly. All you will end up doing is raising the risk of losing your OS drive. Because if one of those two or more drives fail, then you lose the whole kit and kabootle. Gone. Just use a single drive for your OS.

You might consider the opposite and go RAID-1 in to protect yourself from a drive failure.

Well, I was thinking it would speed up startups and app loading times. Also, wouldn’t it help the OS to run faster with caching? Like when I look in the Activity Monitor it says that my VM is 100 GB in size. I have 16 GB of RAM so I’m not paging out often, but I still wonder how much it could help with the VM caching.

Ya, that’s a bit nuts. Go with 1 drive as a boot-up drive. Preferably an internal.

Get a solid state drive if you really want to increase speed. Use time machine or something similar for backups. RAID should never be used for the startup disk.
