The audio is, by default, intentionally MUTED to the Mac’s speaker output during Log and Capture.

So you should normally monitor the audio directly from the camcorder or deck you are using to capture. (It is the preferred method.)

CAUTION:
Many people have reported that noise or “pops” appear in the captured clips if the Mac’s internal audio is left on WHILE capturing… so may want to choose “Off During Capture.”

However, there is a way you can turn ON the Mac’s speaker if you really WANT to:

In FCP4x and earlier:

Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings… > Capture Presets (tab)

“Duplicate” the Capture Preset you are now using, when the window opens rename it (I added “MacAudioOn” to the file name).

Click open the “Advanced” button in the Audio section and turn speakers to “ON during Capture.”
The Mac speakers/audio-out will now play Audio during the preview in the Log and Capture window.

That’s one of the differences between a “TV” and broadcast monitor… the ability to switch it to a “calibration mode” so you can adjust the image USING the Bars.

Using a “cheap” computer monitor will be no better than using a “cheap” TV.

There’s a reason “broadcast monitors” cost more.

Music has been used to help “mask” audio flaws for decades.

If you choose the music well, and mix it properly (depending on how “bad” your “flaws” are) you can make a big difference.

While background hum and certain continuous-type noises are relatively easy to isolate and reduce with special digital filtering…

Reverb/Echo is one of the most IMPOSSIBLE-to-fix of audio problems, second only to severely CLIPPED (over-driven) levels.

“EQ” won’t do it.
Its reverb (repetition) of the PRIMARY audio… the same frequency that you want to KEEP.

The “Noise Gate” is probably the best choice, but it will surely PUMP if its set high enough to have very much effect on the reverb. (So it could end up making many tracks sound worse.)

Whatever you try will adversely affect the overall QUALITY of the audio being “fixed” and be very noticeable to the listener (especially compared to any “good” audio in the same production).

I doubt that the problem is “frame mode”.

Sounds like another case of a Canon-recorded tape that won’t play in another brand deck.

Try making a FireWire transfer (dub) of the tape as it plays in the camcorder that it was recorded on, over to a new tape in the Panny deck.

To add Multiple Transitions:

Create the transition you want and make it your “Default Transition”.
(You can change the default by control clicking on it in the fx tab.)

Range Select (Select All of) your clips on the timeline (ON THE TIMELINE).

Drag this selection (yes, the TIMELINE selection) (drag ITSELF back) into the Canvas

What KIND of deck?

On Sony, there can sometimes be a MENU setting that says something like, “A/V > DV Out”.

Turn this setting to “ON”.
It will send the A/V analog input out via the iLink (FireWire).

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

First, save copy of your layered timeline so its easy to “go back”.

Then NEST the tracks you want to affect.

Add the filter to the nest.
