What have you connected it to?
This is a standard SP/DIF optical (Toslink) connection.
You can hook it to any audio gear that accepts it. -

My guess is that this will clear things up.
What you describe sounds like “tracking error” between the head alignments of both units.It might be “worse” (more apparent) as the tape starts and stops at pauses in the recording.
Error-correction can compensate for a lot of this problem, but it simply can’t fix it all.
That said, it MIGHT be that if you re-play the “bad” sections (even on the DVCPro deck) you might get the errors to be less (or at slightly different places) on subsequent passes. If so, you could “cherry-pick” the best sections to use in the final edit.
(We used to pull that same trick with drop-outs on BetaSP.)

To use/view the timecode recorded on an audio track, you’ll need to send that audio (as it plays) to an external TC reader.
This would be a nifty Mac/FCP program for a software writer to concoct.

First thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

Its a bug or some other design flaw. -
Print to Video does NOT make a DVD.
You need iDVD and a SuperDrive (DVD burner) on your Mac.
To get started, in FCP, choose:
File > Export > Quicktime Movie… > Current Settings > Audio & Video > Markers (if any) > Save.
Do NOT check the “make self-contained” (no need if you’re burning with iDVD.)After the export, drop that file onto an open iDVD menu.
Customize the menu(s) if you want.
Burn the DVD.
That’s about it.

I have to assume “Avid DV” of some sort (not Media Composer which DOES have video/audio outputs).
Monitoring “Avid DV” on an external video monitor is as easy as:
Computer > Camcorder > Monitor.Here’s how to connect it, step-by-step:
1. “Quit” the “Avid DV” program.
2. Connect any DV camcorder to the computer via FireWire.
3. Hook any standard monitor or TV (with a video input) to the video outputs on your DV camcorder.
You can use the standard (usually colored yellow) RCA video cable or the “S-video” output from the camcorder if the monitor has one of those kind of inputs.You should ALSO hook up the AUDIO outputs from the camcorder to the same monitor, or any “amplified speakers” so you can monitor the “Avid DV” audio along with the video.
4. Turn ON the camcorder. Switch it to the VCR (player) mode, but don’t put a tape in it (unless you intend to record from “Avid DV” to a DV tape.)
5. Turn ON the Video Monitor and set to view the “Video Input”.
6. Open “Avid DV” on the computer.
7. In “Avid DV”, make sure to select to view thru an external monitor.
You should now see the output of “Avid DV” on the camcorder’s viewfinder screen AND the external monitor.
You will also hear “Avid DV”‘s audio from the speakers that you connected to the camcorder.

The audio is, by default, MUTED to the Mac’s speaker output during Log and Capture.
You should normally monitor the audio directly from the CAMCORDER or DECK you are using to capture (it is the preferred method).
CAUTION:
Many people have reported that noise or “pops” appear in the captured clips if the Mac’s internal audio is left on WHILE capturing… so may want to choose “Off During Capture.”However, there is a way you can turn ON the Mac’s speaker if you really WANT to:
Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings… > Capture Presets (tab)
“Duplicate” the Capture Preset you are now using, when the window opens rename it (I added “MacAudioOn” to the file name).
Click open the “Advanced” button in the Audio section and turn speakers to “ON during Capture.”
The Mac speakers/audio-out will now play Audio during the preview in the Log and Capture window. -
Yes, most who want to adjust the analog gain during CAPTURE (not a good idea, really) usually route the audio thru a mixer.
The main problem with making adjustments during capture is not being able to accurately repeat them during a “batch capture” at a later time.

You COULD mix this by panning all of the “Ch.1” effects (see “Option A” below) to the “center” in FCP.
If you do, all the effects tracks will appear on BOTH channels at a somewhat reduced level. (The VO would be panned full to the right in FCP.)My suggestions:
Option A.
Ch.1 Track of ONLY all sync sound, effects and music.
Ch.2 Track of VO MIXED with all sync sound, effects and music.Option B.
Ch.1 Track of ONLY all sync sound, effects and music.
Ch.2 Track of VO only.Don’t forget to LABEL the tape with the proper track info.
