This does not address the bad quality that the computer image will output.
These NLE’s are not designed to be viewed via the computer monitor for QUALITY.

The image of the timeline on the computer screen is (by design) low resolution.
If that image is converted and shown on a standard video monitor, it will appear even worse.

Just hook up any DV camcorder with FireWire and the image will look great.
Borrow a camcorder and will cost nothing.

That’s, in effect, what happens during a “crash-edit” between two DV camcorders.

Its not a very reliable way to edit (although I have done it a few times myself).

There can be a small “glitch” at the edit-point that the error-correction can usually mask.
But the glitch CAN get to the FW output and FCP can sometimes “see” it and balk.
It can CERTAINLY cause a (virtually invisible to the eye) timecode glitch.
(Many “TC Break” problems in FCP do not appear as such when just viewing the tape.)

The FW DV-to-DV copy can usually cause these glitches to become less of a problem and it the preferred work-around method.

If you still can’t get this to work (even with iMovie) then there is another sure-fire fix.
Copy the master DV to another DV tape… using the S-Video (analog) connection (and audio, if needed.)
This will “lose a generation” (although it will be virtually unnoticeable) but the glitches will simply “not be on” the copy.

The quality coming from the Avid DV edit system sent to the S-Video outs (if there are any) will be VERY poor.
(Not suitable for even low-quality viewing.)
These editors are not designed to output video from the computer, but via a FW camcorder, deck, or DV converter.
The better solution under these conditions is to simply view the smaller image IN the Avid software right on the computer screen.

But to answer your audio connection question… in general, there is usually a headphone or external speaker output connection on most computers.
Hook that to any amplified speaker system or to an audio amp and speakers.

Just a thought.

The Final Cut Pro (menu) > “Easy Setup” should have been set to “DV50-NTSC” before you captured.
This should be done first thing as you start a new project.
Then the timeline and capture should match.

If you DID this, I’m stumped.

When you made the DV-to-DVCAM copy did you have the DVCAM unit set to record “external Timecode”?

It should NOT be (you want the copy to have NEW continuous TC) if you want to try to lessen “timecode break” problems.

A straight FireWire copy, even to another DV (not DVCAM), should make these problems become a non-issue.

Yes to iMovie capture.

You may need to render the audio tracks after you import the iMovie clip into FCP.

Its a “dual-purpose” jack that works either as a standard analog mini (1/8″) stereo jack -OR- an optical digital “Toslink” SP-DIF jack.

There are many audio devices that use these dual-purpose jacks.
I have a couple of Sharp pocket-sized portable MD recorders that have them.

First thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.
