If you are capturing DV footage, then, like David said, it should not be split.

An easy way to do this is to use two video tracks and put every other clip on a different track (Clips 1, 3, 5, 7… on V1, and Clips 2, 4, 6, 8… on V2).
Overlap the ends and use opacity to dissolve (or drop on a standard dissolve).

Just add the FCP Widescreen Filter
Effects > Video Filters > Matte > Widescreen
to any image in FCP.
Export that “cropped” image into Photoshop and MATCH it as your “template” for making the crop bars in Photoshop.

Many who are editing for output in SD use the HDV camcorder’s output settings to downconvert the HDV footage to SD (in the camcorder) and capture via FW in SD.

And since NTSC can’t reproduce the resolution of a computer,
its easily possible to create graphics that a too complex to read-well on video.Gaussian Blur is the blur to use to reduce “image buzz”.
Set it to a low number (between .25 to 2.5 is a good start). -

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

But I was assuming that the OP was using a full-sized (or extended length mini) DV Cam tape.

The software link to the Apple Scripts I gave won’t help with iMovie.
You would have to MANUALLY trash the iMovie preferences.
