    Hi all,

    i’m having a problem:
what’s the correct way to get a hdv file (cropped left an right to 4/3) in a dv sequence ???

when i put a hdv file to a dv sequence, FCP scale this down to 50 percent with an aspect of -25.
to get the anamorphic file back, i have to set the aspect to 0. well, so far no problems.
but i want to crop the left and right side of my picture to get 4/3. as for my understanding, the aspect ratio tells
the width of the picture, not the height as fcp seem to interpret it when moved to -25.
FCP scales to 50 percent and i get a 4/3 letterbox.
to get a full fame with sides cropped i have to scale to 70% – which can’t be corrrect for the hdv file is
1080, and about 70% are 756 pixels in height not 576!!!!
if i look at the hdv in the viewer at 50% it’s perfectly sharp and not blurry as in the canvas.

If i do the same in AE i get a full 4/3 picture at 50% (actually 53% -i know..) with much better quality

the thing is, done in FCP the hdv looks worse than the same filmed with an xm1!

i have to scale it into a dv sequence, for i have to work with a multiclip mixed dv/HDV.

so do i really have to go to AE to amke this work???

    thanx for any help

    regards

    stefan

Many who are editing for output in SD use the HDV camcorder’s output settings to downconvert the HDV footage to SD (in the camcorder) and capture via FW in SD.

But doesn’t that yield a letterboxed clip? Try nudging up or down the scaled and cropped clip one pixel and see if that cleans it up.

Stephan- Use the downconvert in the camera or HDV deck as suggested above. In the IN/OUT REC menu choose iLink HDV-DV CONV. Also in the Z-1/HVR-M10 IN/OUT REC menu is the Down Convert menu where you can choose Squeeze, Letterbox, or Edgecrop to make 16×9 into 4×3.
