  • Delay problem during cature in FCP-4

Posted by Okeoma on November 30, 2005 at 8:54 pm

Hi. I’m very new to the Mac World and to FCP. Each time I try to cature file from my DV camera into FCP-4, there will be a black screen and a message at the bottom saying, “ALLOCATING DISK SPACE”. This will go on for about 10 minutes or so before the catureing process will start. Is there any way I can resovle this problem. A friend told me that I will need to upgrade to FCP-5. I will do not but not now. Please help.

My System is Mac-G4. 933MHZ, 1 GB SDRAM. Runing OS Version 10.3.9
    Thanks.

[Okeoma] “A friend told me that I will need to upgrade to FCP-5.”

FCP4 (FCP3, FCP2) is quite capable of making perfect captures.
Do you have your “Esay SetUp” set to “DV NTSC”?

    Try this:

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

    Next:
It might be a good idea to trash your FCP Preferences.

Click the following link for instructions.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

This is one FCP tip that has helped in solving hundreds of “odd” problems.

In your scratch disk prefs, limit capture now to 30 minutes.

Also, if you’re using “Capture Now”, and have a huge number in the preferences set for the “Limit Capture Now to” option, it will take forever to make sure you have enough space for such a huge capture. Without in and out points, it will assume that you want to capture to the total length for which your “Limit Capture Now” is set.

It’s sometimes best to avoid Capture Now whenever possible, and to keep captures to 15 to 20 minutes in length.

Have you tried logging a few chunks o’video and using Batch Capture instead?

And, lastly, if you have any anti-virus software, it’s a really good idea to disable it when using FCP. If you can get away with it, remove it completely from your computer. There are no viruses that exist yet for OSX, so any anti-virus programs you may be running don’t actually protect your computer, because there’s nothing out there yet from which it needs protecting. Even if someone created one tomorrow, no anti-virus package that exists today could protect you from something that didn’t exist when the anti-virus program was written, anyhow. It would have to be a whole new piece of software. What anti-virus programs really do is help you to be a good citizen by not passing along a Windows virus to a Windows user. If it’s not required that you have anti-virus protection by your employer or whomever, you could just delete it.
