Does the deck stop after 40 minutes when just recording from an analog input?
If not, I’d “trash the preferences” in iMovie and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

TV is a very powerful medium.

There’s the difference right there.
FCP is fully compatible with 44.1 kHz audio files.
It can play them in realtime and can up-convert them internally to 48 kHz if you desire.But FCP is NOT compatible at all with mp3 audio files.
It won’t play them without clicks and stutters, and it won’t up-convert them. -

You at least will be able to capture an SD output from the HDV so you can edit the two cameras’ footage on the same timeline.
But these two cameras will never “match”.
I have a GL1 and its not even a close match to a Sony PD150.
The differences in quality will be very evident.
You’d be much better-off renting a camcorder that better-matches the HDV.

I don’t use this camcorder deck (BVV-5) for ALL of my dubs.
Composite is fine for many dubs (its all we HAD for years).
But when I really want the extra quality, I use a BetaCamSP DECK.
A deck already HAS all the proper inputs & outputs (Composite, Component, sometimes Y/C) and records and plays in color without needing to buy all of the extra adapters and specialized cables to try to make it all work.Where to locate a component “Breakout Cable” for the “Camera Input” on the Sony VA-5 sounds like a job for “Google” search.
