I don’t really know which forum to go and ask this question so I’ll start here since I have two FCP systems. Our TV commercial work has grown at least a 1000 percent this year and I need to find a book, etc. that I can give my new employees relating to writing TV ads. I require all my employees to be familiar with every aspect of video production. I have not found anything useful. Does anyone recommend a book which I could purchase on this topic. Thanks for the help.

Not exactly something that can be taught effectively from a book.

    But I always start HERE:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=Writing+TV+commercials

I’ve been writing them for a few decades… some good, some merely adequate, most all of them SELL.

TV is a very powerful medium.

Ogilvy on ADvertising … David Ogilvy. A classic.

Technique of FIlm Editing – Karel Reisz and Gavin Millar – perfect intro to manipulating story through images.

Influence – Science and Practice – Robert Cialdini …

Effective marketing needs to be first and foremost. A couple of good books to help get you on your way are “The 33 Ruthless Rules of Local Advertising” and “The Wizard of Ads: Turning Words Into Magic and…”
You can find them at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/096673839X/102-8412606-2340900?v=glance&n=283155

    Johnny,

In addition to some good advice above, I agree that writing is a tough thing to learn from a book. But after 25 years as an advertising art and creative director, who also writes, the unquestionably best book on this subject I ever read is “Hey Whipple, Squeeze This” by Luke Sullivan. It’s an Adweek book, I’m sure you can still get it.

    Good luck.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Johnny,

I forgot some other great advice. We always said that all you need in the ad biz is a good memory. This means all great creatives borrow from other things they’ve seen. This is why award shows and the annuals they spew are so popular. So you should go and buy some of the leading annuals of late. These would be, The One Show, New York Art Directors Club, Communication Arts, London’s D&AD, The Andy’s, and The National Addys. Avoid books from local or hack shows that are more about money than creativity.

    Have a wonderful day.
