I am very surprised by your results, as there is a frame sync on the front end of the AJA I/O to capture unstable sources like your VHS machine.
I ASSUME that it works ok with Beta VTR’s, etc.

You should contact AJA support to discuss this issue. You have the latest I/O drivers, but I ASSUME that you downloaded the AJA Pro I/O control panel, and updated your firmware – am I correct about this !!! Because your VHS should be working .

2 Hitachi or Seagate SATA drives with an E4P will give you about 128mb/sec.
So 4 drives (put them in a nice external enclosure, like a Firmtek 4 bay, or Sonnet Fusion 500) will dramatically increase that performance.

the playback offset is standard, and it takes 2 seconds to adjust this. You monitor your audio and video off the AJA I/O, not the MAC audio – no different than you did on the CineWave. The I/O is rock stable, and cheap !
It’s a great product, and will interface beautifully with the Kona 3, when you are ready to do HD (it allows you to upconvert any NTSC signal to HD).

It is amazing to me that you want to plug your AJA box – OR ANY PROFESSIONAL audio device (like a VTR) directly into a powered speaker.
May I URGE YOU to purchase a small mixer to allow you to attenuate the level coming out of your AJA into your speakers. If you don’t want a mixer, you can purchase a volume control like the Mackie Big Knob, to adjust your levels.

The second you get yourself into a feedback situation with your AJA and VTR, you will blow out your speakers.

buy the following –
AKA Kona 3 with K3Box (this will give you Y Pb Pr analog HD output to feed your “glam” monitor, as well as a neat breakout box, for $299).

AJA I/O (to get everything else into your system, and allow you to upconvert your Beta, VHS, etc. to HD.

AJA HD10AVA to convert the analog HD from the HDV VTR into HDSDI with embedded audio, so you can send it directly into your Kona 3.

This combo will give you everything that you need.

I went to your link at the AVID site – you are trying to convince yourself of something that does not exist – sorry.

Want FCP – buy the Blackmagic products – want an equivalent cheap AVID solution – buy the new Mojo SDI. The ONLY way to avoid the AVID Mojo SDI (or Adrenaline) is the Matrox MXO – and this is for OUTPUT ONLY – there is no way to input other than firewire if you use this solution.

I doubt 4 drives will do uncompressed HD (it will definately do DVCProHD). If you want uncompressed HD with SATA, and you want it to be reliable, get a Sonnet E4P card, and 2 Sonnet Fusion 500 chassis with 10 SATA drives, and you will be ok.

Uncompressed HD ain’t cheap – sorry.
