  • Migration from Cinewave to AJA?

I recently learned that our three Pinnacle Cinewave cards have been discontinued and all support has ceased. We have them running on Dual-G4 towers. I am wondering what AJA products will give us comparable performance and features for our SD editing stations. For starters, looking for 4:2:2 SD, balanced analog audio in/out, SDI or AES digital audio in/out, component analog video in/out, SDI digital in/out..

If you’re going to continue running the G4 towers, then the AJA Io is the way to go. The nice thing about these is that they give you all the I/O that you’re used to with CineWave and if you upgrade your computers at some point, they will transfer to the new computers.

What you’ll lose with any new product you switch to is some of the real-time functionality that CineWave added on top of FCP, especially on a G4 system. No other capture card / breakout box on the market can add the RT that CineWave did because nobody else has the extra chip, like the HUB 3, to process the RT features.

With the G5 Duals and now Quads, the Mac itself takes on many of those RT features.
