Welcome to the Cow, Tony! As memory serves, the Walmart smiley sort of “hovers” near things & then moves on, or bounces on ’em. I mention this because if you need to do something like that with it, your graphics (gfx) folks will need a reference to create the animation. Usually a Quicktime of the shot from the timeline is used – just the portion where the gfx go. OR, a faster approach, they could give you a couple of different expression animations of the smiley (happy, surprise, whatever) that are otherwise static onscreen. These anims would have alpha (aka matte, hicon, key) channels, & you’d simply place them on your timeline over where they need to go. Use the motion & distort tabs to give the smiley motion & bounce. As for animation software, the best thing is just tell ’em “to use whatever they’ve got, just give me a Quicktime with an alpha channel.” If it’s only the smiley, the QT can be any size (probably smaller than 720×480/6), as you’ll resize it. If you give them a QT background (BG), they return it same size/framerate with smiley on top. NOTE: any animation that has fast movement will need to be “field rendered” so it doesn’t “jitter” on interlaced video. BTW, the standard apps for this sorta thing would be After Effects, Combustion, Motion, etc. Have fun & enjoy our pasture!

Grin… remember the sound that 1″ would make if the servos didn’t slow down as the tape came off the takeup reel? As the little folded-over bit of tape leader !!! WHACKS !!! through the scanner drum…. and you look around real quick to make sure noone from the maintainence dep’t heard it…

All I know is the method requires sending firewire out to a 2ND Mac for streaming.

Excellent points made above re: 8/10 bit, graphics, etc. I just wanted to add the incredible warm fuzzy feeling you get when using a RAID that supports data parity (aka, RAID 3/5/6). A major reason I went with a Huge Systems RAID; any single drive in the array can fail, AND NO DATA IS LOST. (reread that a few times) If you’ve ever lost a drive, remember that horrible sinking feeling you had. Now multiply it because it’s your business on those drives. Sure, you can redigz footage, but what about all the project files, scripts, graphics, etc etc? For years before moving to FCP I worked on Quantel NLE’s – veddy veddy expensive boxes that have used RAID3 for like 15 years. I’ve lost a handful of drives during my time on Q, but NOT ONCE lost data. Sold me on the concept! Lol – if I had to make the choice, I’d store footage on non-parity drives, and everything ELSE on the RAID3 box.

Oh yeah, don’t get me wrong – there’s no way I’m buying that Panny with the only option for 50/100 recording being a stack of EXPENSIVE P2 chips! My only point was that the 25Mbps just ain’t enough for pro HD. Unless your program consists of flowers on a demo stage. 😉

But you’ve got to agree that Panny has the right idea in offering recording to 100 & 50 Mbps formats. Most of us are still amazed that reasonably-professional looking pix can be acquired at 25 Mbps. So now we’re going to accept a format that squeezes 4 times the pixels onto the same bandwidth? You don’t get something for nothing. [discussed heavily elsewhere] There’s another aspect of HDV that isn’t brought up often – tape dropouts. You get a tape dropout on anything-GOP and you’ve lost more than the single frame we’re used to losing.
Now if only JVC had added the recording format options the Panny has, I think we’d have an awesome unit. Give me the option to record to miniDV tape HDV/DV, or plug in some solid state memory for recording 50/100…. yeah, baby.Bob Woodhead / Atlanta Gun fer Hire / http://www.Woodhead.Net

“…money is not much of a problem… ” hmmm….. sounds to me like you need a networking/render node/compositing/editing/effects wizard to go with all that. But I have to warn you – I don’t come cheap! In fact, I think a company car & corporate jet would not be unreasonable.

Wait a minute – yes I HAVE worked with two mixer panels – duh…. my old Quantel Editbox had a control surface. Wow… there goes another neuron. I hope I remember how to work the mouse…..

Now that would be interesting – I’ve already got a Behringer mixer, which I use not for mixing but as an audio monitor routing device, so I could buy a 2nd mixer just as a control surface… don’t think I’ve ever seen an edit suite with TWO audio mixers.
