I need to buy a turnkey system of 3 G5s, Xsan, and Xserve…. (gulp…help?)
Posted by Matthew Abourezk on April 22, 2005 at 5:35 pmHi all,
OK, I need to take a step up and I need to do it quickly.
My hope is that someone will be able to point me to a company that specializes in selling turnkey systems since I do not have the networking technical expertise…
I need to have (for starters) 3 G5 workstations, all networked and working from a central server where the projects will be stored. I need to be able to have a group work on the same project in FCP.
Any thoughts as to where I can make this process as easy as possible… money is not much of a problem…
Thanks,

April 22, 2005 at 6:20 pm“…money is not much of a problem… ” hmmm….. sounds to me like you need a networking/render node/compositing/editing/effects wizard to go with all that. But I have to warn you – I don’t come cheap! In fact, I think a company car & corporate jet would not be unreasonable.
Oh yeah, like Shane said – promax.com or a competitor, powermax.comBob Woodhead / Atlanta Gun fer Hire / http://www.Woodhead.Net

April 22, 2005 at 8:02 pmThere is a forum here at the barn for just what you are looking for. We just got 7 people running xsan here in my company, and everything works great. Check out

April 22, 2005 at 9:19 pmI 2nd Midwest Media group. Small enough to be affordable but they have enough history to make it all work right the first time. Of course where you live is important. If you just advise, then you could make due with the help here. If you need someone to set the stuff up, and that is the best way, then the companies listed so far are great.

Also consider the CommandSoft’s Fibrejet. I have almost EXACLTY the setup you are looking to build – three G5s, a gigabit network with a file server, an Xserve Raid, a SanBox fibre switch, and FibreJet instead of Xsan. It would suit your needs perfectly, be much more simple to set up and is faster at most things than Xsan is (though I have not tested Xsan directly, I have tested other SAN software that works the same way. Especially on large projects, Fibbrejet is WAY faster). Cost is about the same. CommandSofts support is great and you can always get someone on the phone or a fast reply to an email. I put all this together myself. CommandSoft will also do some turnkey stuff I think, and they will certainly help you with configuration. Its really not all that difficult.
Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.
