  • Behringer BCF2000 Motorized fader control surface for $200!!!

I called Behringer today and their USB flying fader control unit supports the Mackie protocol,

which FCP 5 used for mixing (and other functions)

Simply amazing for under $200. I can’t wait to try this.

BTW Mackie also makes a control surface mixer, which look very nice, and includes
    a jog/shuttle and transport control for $999

Now that would be interesting – I’ve already got a Behringer mixer, which I use not for mixing but as an audio monitor routing device, so I could buy a 2nd mixer just as a control surface… don’t think I’ve ever seen an edit suite with TWO audio mixers.

[Bob] “so I could buy a 2nd mixer just as a control surface… don’t think I’ve ever seen an edit suite with TWO audio mixers. “

Well, the BCF2000 is NOT a 2nd Mixer, it is only a “control surface” (But it does LOOK like a mixer, which I assume is what you meant).

I have worked in Avid suites with a Mackie Mixer and the Avid “audio control surface”.

Its not uncommon at all… just a bit crowded.
(Kind of like the old ANALOG linear edit bays that needed “PILES” of individual dedicated gear.)

Wait a minute – yes I HAVE worked with two mixer panels – duh…. my old Quantel Editbox had a control surface. Wow… there goes another neuron. I hope I remember how to work the mouse…..

One thing I like about the Mackie controller is that it has a timecode display. My clients have always missed the Avid style timecode reader you could position anywhere on the computer display. With the Mackie, clients will be able to reference a timecode display when screening shows.

If Mackie can do it, it would be great to see someone make a stand-alone timecode reader that uses the Mackie protocol and plugs in via USB.

Tascam also has a couple of boards that function as controllers and mixers, but none of them have a timecode display.

    Cheers

Is there any more info on exactly what else can be controlled in FCP5 Via the Mackie protocol?

Colour Correction, Adjusting the parameters of the motion tab (Size, position and rotation) and Ramping VariSpeeds would be good.

It would be good if while parked on a clip in the timeline, setting the interface into colour correction mode, then moving any fader automatiaclly drops a colour correction filter onto the current clip and switches FCP into colour correction mode. With a split view in the frame viewer. Just by touch a fader.

Oddly enough I’m going to order a Behringer DDX 3216 with AES option anyway, so another bit of Behringer kit would look great.
