Just had this wonderful Zen-like feeling, as all my editing & effects apps danced to my muse, with the few seconds of rendering giving me time for news & Cow… “Expose”-ing between the 15 or so running apps… Compressor churning…. approvals FTP’ing… and it felt so RIGHT.
What do I miss from the “old days”? not much… the intern bringing me snacks (…”you KNOW we like snacks, Zim”…), the “feel” of editing on Quantel… all the pretty lights in a linear suite… union “Golden Time”…. but until I sell the hacienda & toss the FCP suite in a motorhome so I can edit in the National park du’ jour, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Yea, but don’t you miss that small amount of free time you got while waiting for a 90 min reel of 1-inch tape to rewind from the end back to the beginning just to edit in that one scene? I was the master of the two minute cat-nap.

Amen to that too!!!! There are some drawbacks to these wonderful boxes of technology. I, too, miss those catnaps. But I have learned that if you over complicate and After Effects project, you can get a nice long nap while its rendering.

The thing I’m going to miss most when I’m finally provided a new G5 with FCP, I’m currently on a 11 year old Media100, is getting near the end of projects and needing to render them out. This is a great reason to take a long 2 or 3 hour lunch. I’m able to say “I’m rendering out a project now, there’s nothing I can do anyway…I’m going to lunch.” Then they, the bosses, ask me, “When will it be done?” As to which I reply, “Don’t really know, but I’m guessing a few hours, the project was 2 minutes long…that’s a long render!”

Yea, I just ordered a new G5 that will be much faster than my trusty old dual 1Ghz G4. I guess that will result in shorter lunch breaks as well. Could stand to loose a few pounds anyway. 🙂
Oh well, I just hope it’s as stable as my current machine. It’s a rock.
    Crossing my fingers!

Hate to break it to you, but all this RT? It’s usually RT Preview. So the end result is that you still have to render before output.

Yes, but the renders take much less time for a given effect than they used to.
I guess i’ll just to add more stuff and filters to each clip to make up the difference.

Oh, you definitely still need those render breaks.

Uncompressed HD editing, lots and lots of coffee renders!

Big difference between render now versus rendering 11 years ago.
