Sadly, the thing I miss the most is the promise and anticipation of “new” things – with hardware and software what it is today – I expect more and am impressed less! Five years ago, if I saw that FCP5 multicam demo or dynamic RT demo with the 16 layers of HD – I’d of been floored – now, I’m like “yeah, that sounds about right for where we are today – LOL

    G6?

You should be editing while AE is rendering. Oops. Hope no clients are reading.

Grin… remember the sound that 1″ would make if the servos didn’t slow down as the tape came off the takeup reel? As the little folded-over bit of tape leader !!! WHACKS !!! through the scanner drum…. and you look around real quick to make sure noone from the maintainence dep’t heard it…

Personally, I’m trying to get hold of a file with the sound of a two inch head whine – anyone got one?

In those days you waited a long, long time for the tape to spool back.

I remember doing dirty edits on a two inch….had to wait 14 seconds before coming up from black. What a joy it was.

While I don’t have a recording of the great sound that the head wheel on a 2-inch Quad recorder made, I do actually have three of the machines themselves.
An RCA TR-50, an RCA-TR600B and an Ampex ACR-25 cart recorder.
All worked last time I tried them, but that was a couple of years ago. Maybe if I can find a 208 volt, two phase circuit box again, I’ll give them a try.
It was a sound that the younger generation will never know…

Editing on open-reel audio tape, linear editing, Video Toaster and the best movie theater in Dallas. Don’t miss Avid too much though 🙂

[Bernard Newnham] “In those days you waited a long, long time for the tape to spool back. “

One night in the late 70’s we were producing a one-hour late-news special on 2″.
Time got short and we FINISHED on time, but we had to call Master Control to run a series of extra promos (and a quick VO that said “Stay tuned for…) while we waited for the 2” tape to REWIND to the head of the reel, and then RUNNING it to Master (the production machines were not tied to Master) and the engineer threading the beast quickly for playback.
    Now THAT’S cutting it close.
I always think of the “running the tape (3/4″, as I recall) through the building to get it on the air” scene in BROADCAST NEWS.
(Other than the fact that they never bothered to rewind or CUE the tape, its pretty accurate.)

You are preaching to the Choir here. I can’t wait to get my new studio in Vegas finished to I can order my new Dual 2.7 Ghz units with 2 30″ HD Displays each and hook them up to XServe render Farm. Final Cut Studio HD, Shake, Logic Pro, XSan, Blackmagic Multi Bridge Studio, JVC BR-HD50U Deck and 3 JVC GY- HD100’s. Thow in a pair of Mackie Speakers – HR-626, Mackie Onyx 1640 16-channel Analog Mixer and Lightwave 3D and life will be Glorious.

I’ve already ordered my AVID and Microsoft need not apply Banners. And being an old Amiga man, “I WON”T MISS ANY OF THOSE WAIT TIME TO RENDER ANYTHING.” LOL
