Jan, would the above workflow succeed if the laptop is a PC, and the editing system is FCP? If this does work, then my only reservation before purchase is the ability to pull off smooth (no bumps) slow zooms & focus. [other threads out on that topic now] Haven’t found a unit to rent in Atlanta.

Thanks for the reply. I do wish more zoom/focus “real world PRO use” info would be included in reviews. For me this is a critical aspect of the decision process… something that’ll affect day-to-day results more than “…the control for xxx is hard to reach…” On the HVX200, did you feel the slow speed was slow enough, and could you “ramp it down” to a stop without a bump? I’m not nearly as concerned about the top end speed. Do the handheld controls have the same response as remote controls? Ignoring the ergonomic aspect, that is. I **REALLY** appreciate your input, as this is the main speedbump (pun intended) to going with this rig.

    Man… who’s your ISP? 15/2 is awesome.

  • Biggest problem I had wasn’t frame accuracy, but the multiclip Match Frame function not working properly if the clips didn’t have matching code.

HUGE Systems. Been running RAID 3 (almost the same as 5 from a user perspective) for two years. Superb support. I use the 320-R which has removeable IDE drives in a SCSI 320UW chassis. They also have Fibre, for those who need the latest greatest. Haven’t had a drive fail yet, but when I used to edit on Quantel boxes, lost maybe 10 drives over as many years, and NEVER lost a project. Sold me on RAID 3/5.

A year or so ago I bought an AMW portable. It stopped playing dvds after a year, but the video inpput still was fine. That’s when I started using it for stuff like you’re asking about. Heck of a lot smaller/lighter than the field broadcast monitors (ALWAYS take 1 of those, but now I don’t need 2). Little bit o’ gaff tape & it sits real nice whereever I need it.
