But Gary, isn’t the XDCAM Transfer tool still busted in Snow Leopard?

From what I understand, most often, 1080 30p is delivered over a 1080i video stream. It’s not “true” progressive as 720p is. Is your sequence setting set to 1080i? Even still, this shouldn’t cause the interlacing artifacts you’re describing. Sorry if I’m making you more confused! Perhaps someone else can offer a better explanation.

September 9, 2009 at 10:02 pm in reply to: Ex-1 Close up focus problems!!!

Well, yes it is mentioned in the manual. The macro does work, though it’s kinda funky. You mush be set to manual focus – servo (not full manual). The funky part is finding the best focal length – it doesn’t work at either end of the range, only in the middle somewhere. You have to mess with it to figure this out. It’s screwy, but it does work – I’ve been able to focus on tiny objects virtually touching the lens. Different focal lengths focus at different minimal distances – other focal lengths won’t macro-focus at all. This is another one of the rarely mentioned tradeoffs of the amazing little camera (along with crappy servo zoom).
    Good luck

Yes, that’s what I do too. And I agree that it’s a reasonable tradeoff for a camera that costs less than the lens alone of a true broadcast camera. It just surprises me that no one really talks about this as a shortcoming. Still wondering if external controllers can do better.

I have an EX1 that, although I don’t think it’s malfunctioning, has never really been capable of smooth zooms, at least not in the way I’m used to from using regular broadcast lenses. The speed of the rocker is simply too fast for smooth, slow zooms and is not adjustable. To do a slow zoom you have to use such a light touch that it becomes impossible to do reliably, and ruins too many shots. I’ve given up trying. Does anyone know if the external zoom controllers offer better control?

September 3, 2009 at 2:03 pm in reply to: No Video-Out with Apple Color 1.5

I’m in the same boat (no video out with Color 1.5 on my Mac Pro 2.66, with the stock NVIDIA 7300 graphics card) and wondering if there was any resolution to this matter. It’s behaving exactly the same for me as described here – video out only appears when applying a vignette or during rendering.
I’ve tried drivers 6.5 and 7, both NDD and standard.
    Thanks!

  • Of course you can still use the camera and its usb cable to copy your media off of the sxs cards. From what I understand, XDCAM transfer works OK for this under Snow Leopard, though I haven’t tested this yet myself. Has anyone else out there done so?

    Ty,
Color has some nifty effects that allow you to blur part of the image. My experience is that it’s incredibly difficult to pull this off. It doesn’t really look like a lense’s shallow focus – It always looks like an effect. If you haven’t used Color yet, I highly recommend trying it out, it’s quite amazing. It is daunting at first though.
    Good Luck!

August 15, 2009 at 9:46 pm in reply to: Opinions on EX1 Accessories?

After agonizing for months now, I finally broke down and bought the MMB-1. It’s the only matte box that meets all of my criteria:

    -Wide angle
    -Usable as clip-on or rails
-Gets along with the over-the-lens mic of the EX1
-Works with broadcast lenses (with appropriate adapter rings)

One word of caution: contrary to what the guy at Abel Cine told me, the $1500 matte box does not come with rails or the clamp adapter for the ex1. Unless you’ve already got a rails system, it’s useless. The rails will set you back $500, the ring $100. If you want to use it with a standard broadcast lens, you have to pay another $300 for the adapters. That’s $2400, and you don’t even have the brow or sidewings, just a basic matte box.

It is, however, a GORGEOUS piece of engineering. It just rubs me the wrong way to pay $2400 for something that basically allows you to put filters in front of the lens of a $6000 camera.

In your camera’s menu under “Other” there’s an item called Direct Menu. It can be set either for “part” or “all”. Switch it to “part”. You should have control of your camera back.
