One of our office people tried to incinerate our Ikan V8000 monitor a few weeks ago by taking whatever high-current power supply they could find in the drawer, in reverse polarity of course, and plugging it in. It exploded a capacitor on the main board but the internal fuse and diode right off the DC input held strong. I replaced the cheap capacitor and it’s rocking and rolling again. Other than that, the connectors are flimsy but the unit itself seems reasonably durable.

After agonizing for months now, I finally broke down and bought the MMB-1. It’s the only matte box that meets all of my criteria:

    -Wide angle
    -Usable as clip-on or rails
-Gets along with the over-the-lens mic of the EX1
-Works with broadcast lenses (with appropriate adapter rings)

One word of caution: contrary to what the guy at Abel Cine told me, the $1500 matte box does not come with rails or the clamp adapter for the ex1. Unless you’ve already got a rails system, it’s useless. The rails will set you back $500, the ring $100. If you want to use it with a standard broadcast lens, you have to pay another $300 for the adapters. That’s $2400, and you don’t even have the brow or sidewings, just a basic matte box.

It is, however, a GORGEOUS piece of engineering. It just rubs me the wrong way to pay $2400 for something that basically allows you to put filters in front of the lens of a $6000 camera.
