HELP 1080 to SD DVD subtle interlacing artifacts on movement
Hi all,
I don’t know what to do here. I edited in a 1080 30p DVC pro sequence. I rendered a quicktime movie into AE… added supers, etc. Rendered back out 1080 30p. I bring it back into FCP, nest it in an SD timeline 30p. Everything looks fine. I send to compressor to create a progressive .m2v. When I play in QT, looks great. as soon as I burn it in DVD studio pro though, there are artifacts on pans and movement… looks like interlacing. I’ve tried nearly every single thing I can think of, nothing fixes it. Has anyone else had a problem downconverting 1080 30p material to an SD DVD?

Did you monitor the project on an external monitor? What are your sequence settings.
You can go to Compressor from the HD timeline, no need to nest in an SD timeline. Just make sure you select the correct settings to make the mpeg file.

Thanks for the response. Sequence is an HD 1280×1080 with corresponding PAR using DVCPROHD 1080p30 codec. Field dominance set to none. Everything plays great in timeline, monitors fine on my broadcast.
I may try building supers in my FCP project instead of AE and send to compressor from there to eliminate the extra trip, though sorry… as much as I use compressor, I’ve never scaled and letterboxed within compressor… could you give a very quick explanation for a man on a tight deadline?

Okay, I’m confused. I just saw something. When I bring a 1080 UNXD file back from AE (after supers) and drop it into an FCP sequence, it sets field dominance to upper… although my file is interpreted w/o fields in AE and I render progressive…
I’m confused. I can edit DVCPROHD 30p footage always in a progressive timeline, right?

From what I understand, most often, 1080 30p is delivered over a 1080i video stream. It’s not “true” progressive as 720p is. Is your sequence setting set to 1080i? Even still, this shouldn’t cause the interlacing artifacts you’re describing. Sorry if I’m making you more confused! Perhaps someone else can offer a better explanation.
