Andy’s Region Blur might work as well – it’s free and I’ve found it very useful. The download button is the FCP effect window.

I believe that the new version might have that feature. You’d need to do it in layers, I’d imagine. I haven’t loaded my copy of Studio yet (waiting for Snow Leopard) but I’m pretty sure it;s in there. Otherwise Joe’s filters has a keyframable soft pattern filter that could work.

    Ty,
Color has some nifty effects that allow you to blur part of the image. My experience is that it’s incredibly difficult to pull this off. It doesn’t really look like a lense’s shallow focus – It always looks like an effect. If you haven’t used Color yet, I highly recommend trying it out, it’s quite amazing. It is daunting at first though.
    Good Luck!

Depth of field can be simulated using compound blur. The Crumblepop ShrinkRay filter is a prepackaged compound blur effect that dramatically simplifies the illusion. However, none of these are 3D aware and the illusion is easily destroyed by improper application of the filter’s blur ranges.

Motion 4 has a delightfully cool DOF function but it requires your guitar player to be a separate layer from the foreground and background elements.

Lenscare by Frischluft is a terrific plugin. It however only works in After Effects. Depending on the effect you are trying to create it might not be a bad idea round-tripping into that application however.
