    you are most welcome

All the NLE manufacturers are trying to get away from EDLs as an edit data exchange medium. FCP in particular is leaning heavily on the XML wrapper to give you more “oomph” in moving sequences and select shot info.

    HOWEVER

Apple is not actually developing any of the apps necessary to take advantage of this, such as some sort of XML to EDL converter, or an XML media management utility, relying instead on third party developers, which are slow to meet the challenge

    That being Said

look at http://www.spherico.com at a utility called XML2TXT. or see waht apple has as far as third party developers for FCP and XML.

    hope this helps

    Welder and Scott

here is a workaround i have found useful:

I take my finished spots and select all the video clips, and drag them to a bin i call “transfer list” i open any nests and do the same, dragging those clips to the same bin

then i first sort by reel, which brings all the non tc sources (transitions, nests, etc) to the top of the bin . i then delete all those non tc sources.

i now sort by “in” select all those clips, and drag them to the video track of a new sequence. i now can export an edl of that sequence and it will be in ascending timecode order.

i print the edl and i go through my spots and check off all the clips on the list. this way i can find a shot or scene i might have missed

you can also compare the total duration of your edl sequence with the cumulative duration of your spots ie 4 spots of material @ 30 seconds each should net you a 2 minute edl sequence

    hope this helps

take what you want and leave the rest.

btw http://www.vcdhelp.com is another site with valuble DVD and Video CD info.

December 18, 2006 at 4:56 pm in reply to: c-mode list from fcp?

    Welder

a little late to the party but….

EDL’s can only represent one track of video so:

make sure all the video you want to transfer or cc is on one track say V1, take any nests you have and copy them to the same track but at the end of your sequence. if your nests are multi layered, you have to string out all the layers onto the one track. same goes for motion etc (you probably already know this)

export an A mode list out of fcp, import it into microsoft excel as a tab delimited text file starting at the first row of actual edit data ie skip the header.

select the column that lists your source-in times (the first tc column) under Data select Sort. it should ask you if you want to expand the selection, say yes. sort by asceneding based on the source tc column, voila! a c mode list! its not an edl, but a colorist can use it. print it out. maybe the colorist has a program that reads tex files, so take the excel file and save it as tab delimited tex onto a cd or a floppy (remeber those?)

we do this al the time, as the concept of Digital Intermediate has not quite caught on here, so we are always doing a one light transfer, then retransfering uncut selects based on timecode. make sure ALL your shots are in the list by going through the list shot by shot (it seems no matter how carefully i do the above procedure, i sometimes find a shot missing from the list)

if you are nervous about excel, find someone who knows it.

    hope this helps

    yo

I have mine set to save 99 copies every 15 minutes. I am too busy making moovies to worry about always saving. (the last editor i used ALWAYS had a one edit backup ie you were always one edit away from recovering from a crash. it kinda spoiled me 🙂

December 12, 2006 at 3:27 pm in reply to: Can someone please give some ideas regarding setup???

    hey dave

So is Telemundo gonna handle all the actual nuts and bolts and all you do is pick out the gear? Nice!
Go with four identical intel computers, the latest and greatest. I would use aja products as many people here give them “lotta snap” (high marks) and try and configure each machine identically to make interchange of projects and fail safing easier

waht are you doing? news? promos? show production? maybe you do not need a SAN, maybe you do (yeah they would be cool, but if your budgets tight the money might be better spent elsewhere)

I just saw an Xsan demo and i was Impressed! are there others like that out there cheaper? probably? are they as reliable? maybe. but when the gear fails, at least you don’t get finger pointing from different mfrs! (engineers like that!)

have you used FCP? whats your preference? find another user or 2 in the area and ask to see his or her facility.

who else is gonna use the stuff? producer directors? or just editors and graphic artisits? (wahts there preferences? maybe you dont need 4 fcp stations as much as 2 fcp and 2 ae boxes (ae works great on mac as well as pc) or all 4 boxes get FCP studio, AE, automatic duck.

    hope this helps
