I use the incrmenter for reel name, and make that my clip name as well, so i can see at a glance where all my media comes from

I try no to use lengthy names as clip names, such as “bill walks in to room, kills brother” I use names more like “bill pov” or “exterior shoot”

or Reel5
I use the other fields for pertinent data, like scene and take

adn i also concur that accepting the @#$%^ idiosyncrasies of fcp IS faster than fighting them, or trying to even bend them

Its better to make a bin as well. in FCP there is often a need to trash the preferences. when you do you lose all your favorites. if you have them in a bin saved to project or even a generic project, you can recover them and re instate as your favorites easily

actually, i did some resizeing in Compressor, and i thought the result was better than FCP. I go the info from the interweb, by doing a google for up size or re size. Sorry i cannot be more specific, as it was a while ago. but it would be worth it to you to look into it

the primary benefit of compressor is it has a very good interpolation algorithm that makes the blowups seem less blown up.

WE have 2 systems, one uses Kona LH and the other uses and IO la (both are “lite” versions of the real deal)

Our situation is 2 fixed edit rooms with real ntsc video monitors, audio monitors, and tape decks. for this i find the IO limiting.

I cannot have any other firewire device attached except through a third party FW card. It will not support ANY HD so everything has to be dvcpro50 or dv or 8 bit. When i do want to capture dv material via firewire i have to unplug the IO and restart the machine. in other words, its not practiccla for edit room application HOWEVER i am sure its great if you are on the road or something

I much prefer the Kona Card as it has all sorts of Good down and upconversions from HD to SD and back. AND you can use the extra money for sdi to analog converters for that popular analog world (we master everything to betaSP and make copies and dubs from that so i guess you couold say we use our Beta as a format converter.

The Io may also be good for a Photoshop AE 3D workstation envirionment, allowing you to connect a generic PC or Mac to a tv monitor, but there are cheaper ways to do that

HOWEVER

What i have found to work best and fastest is to export out of FCP a self contained movie using default, which matches whatever your sequence is set to, and then use compressor to convert. why? cuz i can run compressor in the background while still editing, instead of waiting for compressor to finish.

i beleive , although i have not tried it yet, there is way to make a “droplet” that makes using compressor even faster.

HI Again

I rip (import) CD tracks a lot, and I either use Itunes when i want to hear and rip at the same time OR i use a program called Max, which wont let you hear the cd track, but gives you the option of setting a file name prefixe so all my ripped tracks are named CoolMusic.001, Cool Music.002 etc. the downside is it only rips at 44.1, so i have to convert before importing into fcp. look around for other rippers as well
most give you file nameing abilities.

When i do use i tunes this is what i found helps:

Set a “library” folder someplace you can easily find, like in the job folder on your capture scratch such as HardDrive1>Final cut pro Documents>capture scratch>my job>music imports

then set the import format for AIF 48khz 16 bit, and set the folder preferences to keep organized ie artist, album and so on.

when you are done Importing the CD tracks, import files and folders into fcp, the folders will have the disc and artist name for referenceing

you can always right click on any clip audio or video and “reveal in finder” believe it or not, even though you may have 5 tracks that are called track1.aif, FCP keeps track of them.

rather than belittle one or the other, i will tell you this

when the audio does not matchframe properly, its usually due to confusion over audio renders, under tools use the render manager to delete them. that should work better

also, in response to your other post about jkl and the audio shuttle: You need a card like a kona LH or something and it will give you better audio scrubbing. FCP by itself garbles the sound a lot more in shuttle.

we have 2 systems, one with a Kona LH and One with an IO la (basically a firewire converter) the kona LH is a bunch better for shuttling, as well as other stuff.

ps, what happens if you get a MOJO on the express and digi yer footage through that analog component? no?
