I work for Telemundo/NBC in New York and we are changing over to FCP. They have put me in charge of the change over, I guess because I am the chief editor/graphics guy, and I need to know what I need nuts to bolts. Besides the Mac of course, do I go with an X-raid as opposed to something else, what type of break out box do I need, Aja or Black Magic or whatever? I need to know it all. We are buildin 4 edit suites which all need to be tied together. All ideas and input are welcome.
    Thanks,

    Dave

    hey dave

So is Telemundo gonna handle all the actual nuts and bolts and all you do is pick out the gear? Nice!
Go with four identical intel computers, the latest and greatest. I would use aja products as many people here give them “lotta snap” (high marks) and try and configure each machine identically to make interchange of projects and fail safing easier

waht are you doing? news? promos? show production? maybe you do not need a SAN, maybe you do (yeah they would be cool, but if your budgets tight the money might be better spent elsewhere)

I just saw an Xsan demo and i was Impressed! are there others like that out there cheaper? probably? are they as reliable? maybe. but when the gear fails, at least you don’t get finger pointing from different mfrs! (engineers like that!)

have you used FCP? whats your preference? find another user or 2 in the area and ask to see his or her facility.

who else is gonna use the stuff? producer directors? or just editors and graphic artisits? (wahts there preferences? maybe you dont need 4 fcp stations as much as 2 fcp and 2 ae boxes (ae works great on mac as well as pc) or all 4 boxes get FCP studio, AE, automatic duck.

    hope this helps

Xsan is the way to go. I am working at a norwegian broadcasthouse with 14 editing suites tied together. Working on dv-dvcpro50-digibeta. Works smooth, but get professional help to put it all together. We all have decklink cards that works nice, but I’ve heard that so do the Ajas too… There are other people here at creativecow that work at much bigger xsan systems, and are willing to help. Good luck

I’m running both an AJA Io for component analog input/output and a Kona3 for HD on the same computer. It’s a good combo and I have the ability to use just about any format both in and out of the system. The Kona3 is especially useful since it will upconvert and downconvert on the fly. It’s a great timesaver and very high quality conversion to boot. I have several AJA products as well to feed client monitors and to convert from analog to digital when necessary. The AJA products just work and make my life easier.
