Killing Auto Save?
Posted by Richard Boddington on December 18, 2006 at 2:47 amHi,
How do I disable the auto save function in FCP?
It’s pretty annoying.
Thanks

It’s very straightforward in the manual.

But the manual is holding up the couch in the edit suite.
Thanks

December 18, 2006 at 5:56 amAnd what about the online manual available right there in FCP?

Then use the Help menu. It’s the electronic version of the manual right in FCP. Upper right section of the FCP Screen. Click Help and in the case of this question, type “Auto Save.” Your answer is there in less than 5 seconds.
I use this all the time.

December 18, 2006 at 1:45 pmI’m just curious here. What’s so annoying about Autosave? It runs in the background, takes only asecond or two to do it’s function (unless you are working on a huge project) and can save your butt in the event of a crash or a corrupt file.
Maybe I’m missing something?

Most of my projects are huge and it can stop the production process for up to 30 seconds to a minute on our documentary projects. So yes, it can be annoying. I’ve never used Auto Save in the 5+ years of running FCP as I always have my left hand on the keyboard so I just naturally hit Apple+S all the time.

What if your project file becomes corrupt? I hope you “save as” occasionally so you have some sort of backup.

I have mine set to save 99 copies every 15 minutes. I am too busy making moovies to worry about always saving. (the last editor i used ALWAYS had a one edit backup ie you were always one edit away from recovering from a crash. it kinda spoiled me 🙂

Save projects to a USB stick at lunch and at the end of the day.
