I’d stick with the quad core for now versus the octo. Sure Leopard will be 64 bit but the New FInal Cut does not appear to be 64 bit. So access to memory will not be as fast. There also appears to be a bottleneck in the frontside bus. Sure this is a faster computer for renders, but not a big enough bang for the buck if you ask me.

I’d stick with the quad for now and possibly wait until next year, when FCP 6.5 or 7 is announced. By then Intel will have new quad core processors with the new 64nm architecture. They’ll probably be a little more cost effective too. Hopefully by then Apple will boost the front side bus speed and the new computers will come with Leopard.

Thanks for all the responses. I pretty much thought it would be an AE or Boris solution. Unfortunately I dont have enough experience with these two programs but I just may pick them up after the new apple mac pros are introduced. Something for me to learn in the coming year 🙂

I own the 50 ” 8UK which is essentially the same set that you own. We have both a photography and Videography business. I’ve put together numerous presentations for both and all I can say is that you’ll never get an image to look as good on a plasma as you will with say an Apple 30″ LCD. We usually seperate our HD video material and our photographic material for the LCD.

However, to get to your question, most any flat screen displays are susceptible to screen burn in. If you insist on leaving the displays going with pictures just set them up in a slideshow which can easily be done in iPhoto, Lightroom or Aperture.

I would convert it to either a flash .swf or .flv I’ve had very few people complain of not being able to see our online demos. Quicktime can be a hit or miss.

    I agree 100%,

More than likely apple will be releasing a dual quad core system.

    Hi Jerry,

I’m already a subscriber and read your article. BTW, that was one heck of a great piece. It looks as though I’ll have to go that route, with the Kona Card and an a raid. Hopefully some new tools will pop up a NAB.

  • I highly recommend VisualApex.com I bought my 50 ” HD 8UK from them 2 years ago and other equipment just recently. They are fabulous and my plasma is awesome. Of course I paid $4000.00 for the same TV but thats technology and I have 2 years enjoyment out of it.

I use this plasma for TV viewing, as a computer monitor and game playing and there has been no issue whatsoever with burn in. I’d say its a non issue. Good luck with your purchase.

I’m considering buying one of thes 9UKs for a tradeshow but I’m undecided if I really need the 50 or to just go with the 42 and save 700.00

Apple will be coming out with a new dual QUAD CORE machine very soon. Intel has a timeline of a 50 core machine in 5 years. So its feasible that we see a doubling of power again every 12 months from here on in.

Like the above poster mentioned, they’ll always be coming out with something better and cheaper, but in the meantime you should be making money with your new gear.

I’m waiting on a double quad core machine myself. However before we see any significant jumps in speed we need the software to take advantage of not only the 64 bit architecture but the multiple cores. So first we’ll need the new operating system and then the rest. The only thing I hate about waiting for all of this is by the time its ready for shipping in may or june, I’ll be to busy to upgrade. 🙁
