Are you trying to export to tape? if so it wouldn’t work, the device control is going try to select one deck, try playing back the timeline to external DV device like you are going to preview it then it should appear on all the ports on the hub, what I used to do is put about 60 frames of black for a pre-roll and then start the deck and cam, I used the remote as they were both sony and the remote would start them both at the same time.

What do you plan on playing back the footage on? if you play back 720×480 NTSC with that ratio on a Widescreen TV you will have tall skinney people.

Firewire control in premiere is for one device only, you can feed the video to more than one device but you will have to start and stop them manually

If the laptop has a Express Card port, SATA drives are the way to go.

The core 2 duo laptops are starting hit the market with even more zap, most new laptops have express ports so you can use external SATA drives also some have two drives built in, SDI is another question all together there is supposed to be an express card developed soon.

The cards that Adobe lists for Ppro 2 is for GPU acceleration for certain effects, they list 6800/7800 chipsets, the newer 7900/7950 cards also work they just haven’t updated their site yet, all these cards are also 3D

The HD disk may have better throughput than your USB drives, the density of the data passing under the head per period has more to do with it than the speed, The USB sytem depending on how many things you have hanging on it can be slow and erratic, Memory whether slower or faster doesn’t have much to do with it if it meets the CPU’s throughput demands, A graphics card has little to do with it if it meets the required standards for display and maybe not so demanding on CPU resources

The clue is in the CPU usage, is your 2.8 hyperthreaded? alot of older RDram systems weren’t, your friends laptop maybe hyperthreaded, this can give up to a 15%boost in processing power making a 3.0 processor look like a 3.4

You can also optimize windows to reduce system services to reduce CPU load.
