Also in that vein, Premiere Elements will support it, and all named will recompress and sometimes can make a mess. If you want to do just cuts editing try something like VideoRedo, which will cut, assemble, and rerecord without recompression.

What kind of a source file are you using?Have you tried to “Recreate the Plug-in Cache file” by holding down the Shift key when starting Ppro and holding it till the project selection window appears?
Have you updated your video card drivers lately? if not do so, if you have try rolling back to a previous version -
Problem is unless you shot the 4:3 for later conversion, the widescreen result ends up cropping the vertical as its essentially a zoom to fit the horiz.

To avoid the double conversion, output to tape and recapture on a Mac as .dv, it should be fairly lossless except for .dv

Stop when you make the first QT file, there is no reason for further conversion, QT files play fine on a Mac.

For PremierePro thats correct, it recreates the Plug-in Cache file(preferences), when Adobe products get wonky this is one of the first thing to try, there are different key strokes for Photoshop Illustrator, etc.

Why not save it as a QT file vice converting to a .dv

Like Harm says you will lose resolution if you try to scale the image to fit, you should have left the anamorphic adapter on the cam, the minor loss of horiz. sharpness is negligible compared to scalling the video, one way to solve your problem is to use the 4:3 footage and composite background material into where the pillar bars are on the 16:9 screen
