You need Avid Xpress Pro HD version 5.5, which has not yet been released. That is the first version that will support HDV. V4.6 doesn’t support HD anything.

Do you see little speaker icons next to the track selection buttons in the timeline? That selects the tracks that play through the speakers, and it is possible to turn off monitoring on all tracks.

Tektronix makes a software WFM/Vectorscope plug-in for NLE systems. It’s a bit pricey, but you get the same functionality as on their hardware scopes. But all software scopes (even those built into Avid) use lots of CPU horsepower, so they aren’t ideal for real time monitoring.

Is the Audio Mix Tool in Avid set to “Mono Mix”? You must be on “Stereo Mix” if you want to export stereo regardless of how the tracks are built in the timeline.

We have Sonic SD-2000 on O/S 9.04, and we can encode sucessfully all the way up to the total size of the DVD. If you have “Enable Large File Support” checked, you are encoding into one large file. Have you tried unchecking that option so that the system encodes in 1 Gb chunks? There is no issue encoding this way unless you are trying to use the streams in DVDSP.
Another thought: Make sure you are using the correct version of O/S 9 for the Mac you are using. The older G4s need 9.04, while the mirror door G4s need 9.22. This is a source of many weird problems with Sonic.

Which video input are you set to? On a Mojo system you have the choice of composite, component, s-video, and OHCI. You want the last one — that’s the firewire port.

You can have up to 8 streams of audio (depending on your authoring software). Encode each lanuage mix seperately. For example, if you have a Digital Beta with English stereo on 1/2 and French stereo on 3/4, you encode those streams seperately and drop them both on the picture stream. If the producer hands you a DA-88 tape with 5.1 surround, you encode that and you have another stream to plug-in during authoring.
If you look at a DVD of almost any major motion picture, you will find a combination of stereo and surround streams in various languages. But make sure that you have and know how to use a bit-budgeting spreadsheet before you try this yourself.

If your encode is staying up ariund 8Mbps and you used PCM audio, your total bitrate is at the max for DVD, which is way too high to play successfully off a DVD-R.

There’s no real reason that would stop you from assembling your clips in AE other than the storage space available in your system. Figure about 1.4 Mb per frame for storage on the 720×540 version. But you will find that AE is a very cumbersome tool to assemble something that can be imported & spliced together easily in any modern NLE.
Avids that have 1:1 resolution are used for projects like this all the time. You can use FCP if you have a suitable video output board that can deal with uncompressed media.
