I’m trying to figure out a workflow for the projects I have in mind. I’m creating music tracks with Logic Pro 7 that are between 3 and 6 minutes in length which will also be the length of each movie. The backgrounds and running text for the movies will be created in AE and possibly Motion 2. The final output is destined for 720 x 540 resolution Quicktime files for CD distribution, and half that size for Web use. I was planning to create the video in 20-30 second clips saved with Animation codec and assemble them either in AE or Motion. I decided this because from what I have read, both AE and Motion are optimized for short movies. I understand that if I use FCP for editing it will convert the Quicktime clips into a compressed DV format when importing. I don’t need any complex or fancy transitions between the clips, mostly fades. Should I do this all in AE or is there an editor that is better suited for non-DVD Quicktime movies?

    Quicktime Pro 7

There’s no real reason that would stop you from assembling your clips in AE other than the storage space available in your system. Figure about 1.4 Mb per frame for storage on the 720×540 version. But you will find that AE is a very cumbersome tool to assemble something that can be imported & spliced together easily in any modern NLE.

Avids that have 1:1 resolution are used for projects like this all the time. You can use FCP if you have a suitable video output board that can deal with uncompressed media.

I have two Firewire 7200rpm hard drives for storage so the large files should be no problem. These Quicktime movies are not for professional distribution but I would like to preserve high quality for computer display wether from the CD version or the Web version. I don’t have the funds to invest in an Avid system.

Would Live Stage Pro be better for what I need than AE? I’ve read the product description but it’s a little difficult to figure out what the program actually does. I would like to be sure before I shell out that kind of cash.
