First you need an RS-232 to RS-422 converter such as Rosetta Stone, which will convert the VTR remote to something your serial ports can understand. You will need to change the setting for VTR control from Firewire to the serial port you connected the adapter to. That also gets your timecode from the VTR to the Avid software.
Because you are using Beta SP, you also need a Mojo for its component video ins and outs.

RB, you need to set the colorframer to 4F only if the VTR is editing using the composite analog video input. It’s not needed for component analog or SDI video.
The 4F setting can cause the colorframer to re-lock the servos after they initially achieve servo lock. I don’t think that would be the cause of your problem, but it’s not impossible either.
If I think of anything else to try, I’ll post again.

Avid doesn’t seem to be too picky about computer monitors. The last time I looked, I didn’t find a list of approved monitors on Avid’s web site. You do need at least 1280×1024 resolution at 75Hz. or greater. If you’re planning on LCDs, you need the fastest pixel refresh rate you can get (4-7mS) so the video doesn’t smear. Of course bigger is better. If you want CRT monitors, just about any mid-range or high-end monitor will do, but they can be $500 – $1000. You want a monitor that can be set to D6500 color space so the image will resemble the color displayed on your client monitor.

Try the following:
1. Make sure servo reference on the VTR is set to “Auto” so that it can lock to incoming video during edit record.
2. Are the VTR and the Avid getting reference from the same generator?
3. Turn off the colorframer in the VTR (set to 2F).
4. Does changing the preroll longer or shorter in the Avid help?
5. Does another striped tape work? You might have bad TC.
6. Look in the VTR’s setup menu for any suspicious settings.
7. Try using a VTR profile in the Avid for another DigiBeta (DVW-500).

I’m not sure if this is causing your problem, but did you recently update Quicktime? QT 7.2 seems to be breaking a lot of applications.

We do frame grabs all the time for Columbia Journalism Review, and they work fine. The key is not to make the image too large in the print version.
The reality is that print is a much higher resolution medium than video.

Since your machine is an HDV deck, is it set in the menus to output DVCAM on the Firewire out? Please tell me you aren’t trying to capture HDV through the Mojo, which is NTSC/PAL only. You can downconvert HDV to the Firewire output of the VTR and capture that through the Mojo.
If the above doesn’t help, I don’t know where your problem might be.

All the audio outs are hot all the time. There’s nothing to select. Patch your SDI into the DigiBeta, push the 4 buttons to select SDI audio in, and you should be good to go if your project is set for 48KHz audio.
