  • Double Pre-Roll Problem

    Hey Guys
I’m having trouble laying off to tape.
On either and Inset or Assemble (using In/Out or Entire Sequence) the deck pre-rolls and Avid starts playing down, but the deck misses the in-point and pre-roll’s again. Avid just keeps playing down as it is not seeing this second pre-roll and so the footage is laid down at the wrong TC. (At what point does Avid stop reading the TC from the deck??)

So what is causing this second pre-roll? Is this a deck or Avid problem??

The deck is set as should be. Using Ref from our Gen. Int TC. Regen TC. The tapes were already Black striped from the decks internal SG.

This problem has occurred on two different systems. Avid MC 2.7 w/ Adrenalin and Avid Symphony 5.05 w/ Meridian. The deck is a Sony DVW-M2000 which is relatively new. I was outputting to Digibeta both times. It hasn’t happened on our older Thompson Digibeta deck.

Any idea?? Thanks for any help.

    Try the following:

    1. Make sure servo reference on the VTR is set to “Auto” so that it can lock to incoming video during edit record.

    2. Are the VTR and the Avid getting reference from the same generator?

    3. Turn off the colorframer in the VTR (set to 2F).

    4. Does changing the preroll longer or shorter in the Avid help?

    5. Does another striped tape work? You might have bad TC.

    6. Look in the VTR’s setup menu for any suspicious settings.

    7. Try using a VTR profile in the Avid for another DigiBeta (DVW-500).

I hope some of this helps.

    Thanks for the reply!!
    1. Already done.
    2. Avenue Ensemble Designs Sig Gen. All direct (no loopthrough)
    3. Not sure what this is but we’ve always had our decks on 4F. What change is this meant to make?
    4. 5 sec pre-roll. As this is an intermittent issue, we’ve agreed to leave this.
    5. The problem has occurred on different tapes.
    6. None that we’ve noticed. The thing with issues like this is that nothing is changed and then one day it just starts happening. I would like to say age for the deck, but it isn’t really that old.
    7. Already have.

Thanks though. With your points in mind we’ll keep an eye on the system and hope the problem goes away.
Hope you’re enjoying the heat and humidity. I’m struggling to…

RB, you need to set the colorframer to 4F only if the VTR is editing using the composite analog video input. It’s not needed for component analog or SDI video.

The 4F setting can cause the colorframer to re-lock the servos after they initially achieve servo lock. I don’t think that would be the cause of your problem, but it’s not impossible either.

If I think of anything else to try, I’ll post again.
