It depends on the Avid hardware you have. Mojo can capture 2 tracks at a time, Symphony and Adrenaline can capture 8 tracks at a time. Symphony Nitris and DS Nitris can capture 16 tracks at a time. But make sure the audio recorder and the Avid are getting the same video reference or you will have tons of pain & suffering.

I’ve never installed Juicer because everything on my HD Jump Backs or Editor Toolkits can be imported directly by Avid. But if you want to use it, have you asked Digital Juice tech support? The folks there are responsive (and nice).

You can’t mix LVD and HVD peripherals; also there is differential and non-differential SCSI. Most DLT drives like the Quantum DLT-2000/4000/7000 are plain old SCSI-2 that work just fine with Adaptec 2930/2940 cards. But there are differential SCSI versions of some of those drives–a yellow sticker on the back of the drive tells you what kind it is. Later DLT drives like DLT-1 an beyond have more advanced high speed data interfaces.

You can add the graphic to the overlay. For example, if you want a diamond character to appear when the text button changes color to indicate selection, just add a black diamond before each line of text in the overlay. Then make sure the hot zone for each button includes both the line of text and the diamond.
If you want the diamond to appear in a different color from the text, use red for the diamond in the overlay.

Does your DVD authoring software accept an uncompressed QT file? Some do this and encode the media within the authoring program.

I think the best option might be to add a Firewire or USB external drive so that you can export the uncompressed file and work with it. But you may run into a 2Gb file size limit with AVI files. The way to go with large media files is Quicktime.

For an Avid workflow, get Roxio DVDitPro(HD) and use Sorenson Squeeze for encoding. I’ve recently seen Avid Studio Toolkit going for $399, which has the same DVD program.

If you have clips already digitized in the first project, you can open the bin in the new project using file/open bin. You can drag the clips to a new bin, if desired, or just use them from the other projects bin.
Relinking is somewhat of a black art. Steve Bayes book on Avid Editing has a very detailed section devoted to it.

Somewhere in the relink dialog, there is a check box to relink media only from current project. Uncheck that setting and try again.
If that does not solve your problem, you can do an on-line conform, which batch digitizes only the media in your sequence. To do this copy the sequence into a new empty bin, select it, and then go to “consolidate” in the menus. Specify the handle (extra media on each end of the clip — usually 60 frames is fine), and then batch capture the list of clips that will appear in the bin. You are capturing only the media that is actually used in the sequence plus the handles.

You need to have up to 3x the final size of the DVD available as free space on your hard drive before beginning a DVD project.
