How are you exporting the files in DR (daVinci resolve?), Video or data? Quicktime has some very weird ways of automagically remapping ranges that can be quite infuriating, and invisible to the user.
As you noted, there’s a lot of options when you choose AE to manage the color space. Regardless, as long as there’s no clipping going on, you can spend a lot of time diagnosing the problem, when it’s a lot easier to adjust the gain and pedestal within AE to the right values.

DNxHR was released by Avid the week of 1/5/15. Chances are, Resolve won’t see it until BMD incorporates it in a software update. Currently, Avid has not made DNxHR publically available. You have access to it only if you have Media Composer 8.3 licensed.

If you have a BMD component installed, you should have access to the BMD Disk Speed Checker. I would run that and check the thruput of your existing drives. Your Macbook will not playback 4K at full resolution, no matter what you do. You need to dial the rez back to at least 1/4.

It may not be recommended, but, Resolve is flexible enough in playback quality that it can yield smooth playback of 4K by dialing back the resolution of the displayed images. The critical hardware component is the speed of the playback drive. It better be capable of 500 MBps or it won’t playback, no matter how much you dial the resolution back.

In addition to zoom stabilizing, I’ve found that slowing the footage down during the zoom makes the zoom look much much smoother. If you can do a slo-mo over the zoom, that will help.

Alternatively, create a new node and go to the SIZING pane. Make a preset that scales the view to HD. The external viewer will now fill the screen properly. The internal view window will not fill the monitor window, but, you can zoom into the image with a thumbwheel. Just be sure to tick “Force to source resolution” before you render.

I’m using a Highpoint Rocketstore 6428, which gives me eight channels of eSATA III. On one channel, I have an eSATA RAID 0 with 5 eSATA III drives. All this docks to my Macbook Pro retina. Works a great setup, 450 MBps thruput.

REC 2020 and 4K are not, necessarily, connected to one another. While REC2020 encompasses 4k, 4k does not encompass Rec2020.
