Posted by Gianni Saponara on January 4, 2015 at 6:04 pmHi guys,
I\’ve some troubles with DaVinci (10 version) 4k raw playback settings…
All 4k raw dng clips are located on my external hd T3 CalDigit (12Tb thunderbolt 2). I\’m working on a mac book pro retina 15\” (Intel Core i7 quad-core 2,3GHz – Turbo Boost 3,5GHz – 16GB at 1600MHz – Flash PCIe 512GB – Intel Iris Pro Graphics – NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2GB) and I cannot playback my clips…
Can you help me please?

January 4, 2015 at 6:55 pmHello, Gianni,
After looking at the specification of your system, I am somewhat confused about your GFX configuration. As a rule of thumb Intel Iris Pro Graphics is not a sufficiently powerful GPU to work in DaVinci Resolve.
nVidia GeForce GT 750M might work OK.
Would you be able go to DaVinci Resolve Preferences I/O – GPU tab and see which of the GPUs is detected when you experiencing this issues?
Are you able to play other media? -

January 4, 2015 at 9:26 pmHi Dmitry,
in Preferences GPU I\’ve setted Cuda, but I can see the clips only with timeline setted on 1920×1080 and quality resolution Cinema DNG at 1/4…
Please, can you tell me the whole DaVinci settings for playback and edit in 4k?
Thanks -

January 5, 2015 at 3:43 amWhen you go in resolve preferences to the system profile. What do you see there as a processing GPU?

I see three options:

I’ve clicked on Cuda -

January 5, 2015 at 10:21 pmHi Gianni,
I’m afraid the new Macbook Pro is not recommended for 2K/4K Raw workflow. Maybe with an external PCI Expander with additional GPU cards, you can solve the problem, but this is not a cheap option. Take a look at this: Netstor NA211TB+GTX680 GPU

January 6, 2015 at 1:29 pmIt may not be recommended, but, Resolve is flexible enough in playback quality that it can yield smooth playback of 4K by dialing back the resolution of the displayed images. The critical hardware component is the speed of the playback drive. It better be capable of 500 MBps or it won’t playback, no matter how much you dial the resolution back.

January 6, 2015 at 1:47 pmDo you think I can playback and edit 4k raw clips with DaVinci, if I upgrade my MacBook pro with a Sonnet Echo Express SE II and a BlackMagic DeckLink SDI 4K?

January 7, 2015 at 1:22 pmIf you have a BMD component installed, you should have access to the BMD Disk Speed Checker. I would run that and check the thruput of your existing drives. Your Macbook will not playback 4K at full resolution, no matter what you do. You need to dial the rez back to at least 1/4.
