You may want to consider the Tascam FW1802

It’s a small mixer with Mic and Line level and Spdif inputs, but also functions as a control surface with automation within FCP. I have read good things about it on this forum – people are definitely using it with FCP. We are considering the Mackie UI as an option, same size roughly as the Mackie, but without the audio inputs (for which we have other options).
It may be more than you want to spend, although it probably costs less than you think. Some of the Behringer gear (such as the oft maligned BCF2000 – or similar) is not really up to scratch, and may fall under the catagory of ‘you get what you pay for’.
Just an opinion, obviously.

The Promax name comes up so often here that I have already given it to the boss. I only wondered if their was someone more local who could offer on-site support if required. I expect Promax could offer good support anyway.
Normally we would ship a system over for work in the US. Right now all the stand-alone systems are out on hire (FCP is booming in the UK) and the HD systems are pre-installed in our HD truck (btw – have a look at our main suite in the truck at https://www.editecuk.com/editsuite2_op_800x531.jpg ) so it seems a good idea to get a new system, when the job is not too critical, and ship it back when we’re finished – saves a lot of money with the exchange rate as it is. Of course there are some risks, but I have a fallback and a cloned system drive from home, so it seems a reasonable thing to do.
If we can’t make this option work, I’ll get straight in contact with you David – a useful contact for the future for sure.

You may find this easier if you have the ‘image+wireframe’ option selected in the drop-down menu on the canvas. If you re-size both clips to 50% scale in the motion tab, and have wireframe selected, you can just drag them to the positions you want. It’s as easy as moving images in Word.

I recommend an excellent (and free) app called “Disk Inventory X”. You can find it here:

This scans any hard drive/folder on your system and displays graphically how much space everything is taking up. Extraordinarily useful on a busy laptop hard drive for weeding out forgotten Gb’s of rubbish…

Love to chat about this – for sure we don’t have enough experience of using it in anger yet, but I am aware of a lot of updates to the system (and it seems to be an ongoing thing). We’ll see if we jumped too soon with it – or if we missed the ‘teething’ period – in a couple of months. Gotta get some time at the office to test it further, but I’m away so much at the moment.
As a product, though – it should give us the flexibility we need for the future. If it doesn’t, back it goes….

Second the Terrablock recommendation – we have just fitted one in our new truck, shared between two stations. It has the added benefit of being a) scaleable and b) simple to configure and maintain.
I would be wary of any solution that leaves you across two fibre setups – just managing one is a headache. If you search the terrablock website they have a nice comparison of the complexities of a fibre-channel setup. I suggest you show it to your boss 😉

The manual is very good in FCP – easy to search and well laid out.

I second Borjis – has endless problems with builds in DVDSP until I switched to AC3 audio – used to have to do it via the (now defunct) A-pack, but now it’s right there in compressor. It stops your bitrates getting too high essentially, and causing the disk build to fall over.
Don’t worry about sync, by the way. When you drop these both into a track in DVDSP, they will be synced up fine – never had a problem.

I always understood that the term ‘uncompressed’ here meant to imply that the codec was able to decompress the footage with no loss of quality – no perceptible loss anyway…. Obviously, the term ‘uncompressed’ is misleading, but remember that all video codecs involve compression, some are just lossless. Digibeta works on 2:1 compression, taking the 540Mb/s stream down to a more manageable 270Mb/s, and even HDCAM SR works at 440Mb/s (in single link mode I think) due to the advanced (but pretty damn lossless) compression used.
Even the RAW format used in stills is actually a codec – nothing is REALLY uncompressed when transcoded to data from the optical source…
Stupid name, isn’t it? Sounds good to clients though….
