audio mixer for FCP editing
OK I understand that this is the final cut forum, but its the system I use and this is more related to edit suites operation and you guys are all about that, not hard core audio engineers as such, and well, I kinda know who I’m getting the advice from too:)
so…
I’m looking for an Audio mixer for my edit suite. I figure I need to patch my analogue out from my blackmagic card to my speakers. I’ll also need a way to patch XLR ins into my speakers from any deck I may get in. Then there is the DVD player…
I wouldn’t need this for broadcast audio. That either goes straight to the deck via SDI after it has been mixed professionally. It really is for me just to patch things together to monitor and maybe Guide VO.

Apart from the obvious that I have pointed out, is there any other consideration, edit suite operation peculiarity that needs to be thought of when getting a little mixer for a single edit suite?I’m not sure what effects sends do, or are they completely useless in a video editing environment? Same for EQ function on the desk.

To answer your question, maybe, if you plan on or have need to use a few more devices in your suite, this mixer may come up short. Seems you’re on a budget, Behringer makes a bunch of different mixers that are fine, some have sliders if you want that, then there are Mackie and others. A couple years ago many of these went FireWire, I picked up a Macie 1202 at Guitar Center dirt cheap when that happened.

You may want to consider the Tascam FW1802

It’s a small mixer with Mic and Line level and Spdif inputs, but also functions as a control surface with automation within FCP. I have read good things about it on this forum – people are definitely using it with FCP. We are considering the Mackie UI as an option, same size roughly as the Mackie, but without the audio inputs (for which we have other options).
It may be more than you want to spend, although it probably costs less than you think. Some of the Behringer gear (such as the oft maligned BCF2000 – or similar) is not really up to scratch, and may fall under the catagory of ‘you get what you pay for’.
Just an opinion, obviously.

We have Mackie, Yamaha, and Behringer mixers here. My least favorite is the Yamaha. I like the Behringer 1204FX that we have because it is like a fourth of the cost of our Mackie. We only use it to monitor audio.
Yes. The FX are pointless, but it does make the mixer look more complex which is good for clients.
I haven’t had any issues with our Behringer mixer and would buy another one if I needed.

Mackie 1604 in my suite…love it to death. Have my Beat Deck, I/O analog outs, DVD/VCR, and DSR analog signaals all going through it and have some slots still open.
