Two Fibre connections at once
I’m having to build a new system at work and have been reading posts on the forum for hours. I still haven’t found anything about this issue. I was looking to Fibre solutions for a local RAID for the system, however my boss told me that at some point in the near future (6 months) we might be getting some sort of shared storeage for certain media that everyone uses all the time. I’m having to build this edit system before we will know if we are going to be getting shared storage. I’d just like to know if anyone has had any problems or praises with using a Quad-channel Fibre card to access multiple RAIDS at the same time. We’d only need to write to one RAID at a time, but need to be able to access them at the same time. Any info would help out greatly.

I’d suggest you post this on the Xsan or San networks forum.
If you are accesing the same media, you will need some type of San somewhere along the line. If you only want to write to one RAID and read the others then you could manage with a volume based SAN such as SanMP
Cheapest way would be:-
1) San in a can solutions such as terrablock
2) Metasan & a fibre channel switch. (File based)Peter

Thanks Peter, that’s one of those why didn’t I think of that things. Sometimes I forget there are forums other than the ones I visit everyday. And yes they are looking into some sort of SAN configuration for the shared media. Sure it’ll be convenient and increase productivity a bit but I don’t think it’s necessary for the type of work we do. A 58K pricetag is a lot for the relatively minor benefits it will give us if you ask me. But I don’t spend the bucks around here, I just push the buttons.

Second the Terrablock recommendation – we have just fitted one in our new truck, shared between two stations. It has the added benefit of being a) scaleable and b) simple to configure and maintain.
I would be wary of any solution that leaves you across two fibre setups – just managing one is a headache. If you search the terrablock website they have a nice comparison of the complexities of a fibre-channel setup. I suggest you show it to your boss 😉

Do thorough research on the terrablock. It was suggested as a SAN for us a year or so back but wasnt flexible or expandable enough. I also know of one client who has thrown one out after no end of problems.
I’d do the Metasan route for just a couple of stations.

Love to chat about this – for sure we don’t have enough experience of using it in anger yet, but I am aware of a lot of updates to the system (and it seems to be an ongoing thing). We’ll see if we jumped too soon with it – or if we missed the ‘teething’ period – in a couple of months. Gotta get some time at the office to test it further, but I’m away so much at the moment.
As a product, though – it should give us the flexibility we need for the future. If it doesn’t, back it goes….
