Apple has shifted all system gamma to 2.2 – as has been widely reported here and elsewhere. In theory this should solve many of the gamma ‘bugs’ that have plagued QT for a while.

As I’m not letting Snow Leopard anywhere near a work machine yet, I’ve yet to see the evidence with my own eyes – others say it’s much improved, although I’ve also read some talk of gamut problems and colour shifts that may be related to driver issues. Again – I’d hold off a while until this is all shaken out.

I think digital heaven have an excellent plugin called box that makes this process simpler and more 24-y. It allows easier cropping and scaling that just using the motion tabs (although, you certainly can do it all for free as Shane says).

Great project for getting a little more involved with keyframes and timeline editing – have fun…

I would suggest doubling your RAM to 12Gb, as it’s generally advisable to have more than 1Gb per core. Although I have no idea why the newer version is less efficient at utilising what you have, the amount of memory allocated per core or thread is relevant in most distributed processing.

Oh – naturally, as others have mentioned here, you’d want to clone your system drive anyway before doing this in case of problems, and I realise people will not want Snow Leopard on their main systems yet, but I thought I’d let some users know it’s not worth even trying this yet – especially as many try this updates on laptop systems first…

I gather from a couple of developers, and a couple of comments from RED staff that Snow Leopard and QT X have fixed the gamma inconsistencies that have plagued Mac users for years. If this is the case (and I’ll find out next week I suppose) I welcome it.

Very happy MXO2 user – never had a single problem with it. I capture ProRes at SD resolutions, and DVCProHD for HD. And, unlike the IOHD it’s actually portable – I can carry all the gear (17″ MBP, G-RAID mini and MXO2) in my laptop bag. I like the IOHD, I just wish it was half the size and a third of the weight.

Also, like the fact that I can plug the MXO2 into one of my Mac Pros and rock some PCI speed.

Your first question should be to ask what the delivery specs are.

That said, in PAL land, HD almost always means 1080i50. So that’s 1080×1920 at 25fps interlaced.

I would suggest you read and learn more about HD before you attempt to cut anything for broadcast.

Animation codec is a heavy duty high bitrate lossless codec used for exporting graphics elements with an alpha channel – it’s very hard to play it back on any system without rendering it out, and having it at 15fps is also a bit bizarre.

If you just want to edit with it then transcode it using compressor into ProRes or similar. If you have FCP7, you can encode it as ProRes 4444 and keep the alpha as well. Unfortunately every method requires a render.

You might have some joy with a band pass filter, if it’s different enough from the speech – it usually gets rid of some of the qualities of the interview record – in this case, it may make it sound muffled.
