Importing QT files exported from an Avid
Posted by Chris Lenart on September 1, 2009 at 8:14 pmI have a whole bunch of QT files exported from an Avid that I need to edit together in FCP. Right now I can view the QT files from my QT Player, but when I import the file into FCP and put it into my timeline I get a message that reads, “Codec could not be opened.” I have already tried downloading Avid QuickTimeCodecs LE 2.0 and that did not help. Anyone have any ideas?
I working on a MacBook Pro OS X 10.5.8 with FCP 6.0.6
The exports came from an Avid Nitris DX using Avid Meridien UncompressedI saw one horrible suggestion on a different website and that was to take the files into compressor and recompress them as QT from there. I have about 60 clips and don’t have the time to do that.
Thanks
Chris

September 1, 2009 at 8:35 pmHmmm…the LE codecs that are provided on the Avid website should work. Well, you can always ask to get the PE versions from the people who provided you with the QT files. There is a separate installer for those on the Avid install disk.

September 1, 2009 at 8:40 pmThere are a number of threads on here discussing issues with the AVID codecs and specific versions for intel macs. Most current download I can find is here:

Maybe that will help…

September 1, 2009 at 8:49 pmThanks Ben & Shane for responding. Ben- I have already tried downloading that codec from avid’s website and it allowed me to view the file in the qt player but I can’t view it in FCP. I will check the other threads. If you know of a good one please pass it along.
Shane- I will try to get the PE versions.
Thanks

September 1, 2009 at 9:11 pmI know you don’t want to convert them, but you will need to render them all anyway once you manage to get them to play. You can’t really work in real time with your files in the Avid Meridien Codec. I’d convert to Apple Uncompressed 8 bit or Pro Res in Compressor. You will save time in the end.

September 1, 2009 at 9:34 pmWell I feel like a donkey. The restart has the file working in FC. It was working in the player so I just figured there was something wrong with FC reading the codec.

September 1, 2009 at 9:38 pmThey must have given me the wrong info on the file because in FC it reads the file as an Avid 1:1x. So in the timeline it plays in real time, unless I add a filter to it. Then I have to render it out. So thankfully I will not have to go through compressor.
Thanks everyone. Sorry the solution was as simple as a restart.

Cool. Glad its working. Out of curiosity, what sequence setting did you use?
Did you create one in the Avid Codec? Or is it actually playing in RT using another preset? -

September 3, 2009 at 3:14 amMy sequence is set as Avid 1:1x and plays as real time. If I change it to DV NTSC then my clips become unrendered. The one thing I noticed is that when there is movement in my clip there is distortion in the object moving. Example. One clip is of someone playing pool. When I cut to the CU of the pool balls being hit and rolling down the table the edges become jagged. That happens in the Avid 1:1x sequence. However If I move that clip into a DV NTSC sequence then render the clip those jagged edges on the ball moving are gone. I don’t know why but I will probably edit in the Avid 1:1x sequence and then when I have it completed move it to a DV NTSC sequence, render it and export to compressor from there. The other thing about the Avid 1:1x sequence is that when I add an effect to the clip it becomes unrendered. No matter what the effect is. Hope some of this info is useful to you.
