Honestly, I’d recommend a Macbook Pro. It’s more flexible (as it can be used anywhere), has more inputs and outputs, such as the expresscard slot on the 17″, as is similarly powered to the iMac. The iMac is a lovely machine (I have one in the office) but the MBP is my mobile and compact edit of choice…

Will there be newer ones out by summer 2010? Probably, maybe, who knows? If there is, get a good deal on the last generation, and save a bundle. If you’re UK based, I just saved £500 on a last-gen 17″ MBP, that is every bit as good as the newer ones, with a fractionally slower processor. In the UK, I use Jigsaw24 – keep an eye out for deals there. Don’t pay a premium for the latest and greatest – A two year old MBP will likely do everything you will want and more.

You could drag them to a new sequence (from the browser) and resize them into a split screen to check sync. It’s almost certain you’ll have to render the sequence before playing it, however.

I’d also add that I use AJA and Blackmagic products regularly, as well as owning an MXO2. I consider all of them to be excellent, well made professional products. The hardware scaling on the MXO2 is excellent. You are outputting S-Video to a DVD recorder. As with MPEG2 file output, this puts limits on the quality you could expect, irrespective of the box you are using. HDV can also be some of the noisiest and busiest HD footage, and prone to these issues. However, do try adjusting the hardware scaling option in the preferences, to see if this improves matters.

On the video output tab of the system preferences for the MXO2 is a setting for aspect ratio – labelled “16:9 to SD aspect ratio”. Have you tried adjusting this?

Also, try adjusting the output format in the top tab of this page. I would note, however, that I would expect to see some loss of quality going from HD to SD – that includes more jagged edges…

Have you considered a pair of Y-cords? Or a small mixer (which would cost less than £100).

I don’t believe there is a software solution to this, other than duplicating all your audio tracks in the timeline – obviously impractical during editing. There would be no way of achieving this from a tape deck either.

Your canvas in FCP is much smaller than a projector screen – so any compression artifacts are much less obvious.

If you start with noisy DV or (shudder) DVD footage, you cannot expect it to hold up well on a big screen. Garbage in, garbage out….

Ralph – If the clips are offline in the browser (have a red line through them) then when you select batch capture you can check the box to capture all offline clips.

Perhaps your clips are not offline – if not, highlight them all and control-click and select ‘make offline’.
