which mac (I know, I know)
okay, first post, go easy on me. I’m going to be getting a mac for the second year of (English) college as we’re using FCP and I’d like to do editing at home on my work. I’m aiming to save up £100 a month for the next year (I’ve got £450 as it stands) and so I should hopefully have about £1500 to spend on a mac. I’ll definitely be looking into getting it second hand, and if not, then with an education discount.
My question is this: will FCP run on a 24″ 2.66ghz iMac (yes, with a dedicated graphics card)? And, actually, what iMac/macbook/MBP would YOU recommend. I will also be running CS4.
The other thing is… does it look like there’ll be any new macs by summer 2010? I mean, most of the apple stuff just comes out of the blue with no warning at all.

Hi.
Depending on your compression iMac should be fine if you talk new one. I would recommend external storage for it. Or MBP with external box. I have seen people editing on regular macbook on a tiny screen.

Honestly, I’d recommend a Macbook Pro. It’s more flexible (as it can be used anywhere), has more inputs and outputs, such as the expresscard slot on the 17″, as is similarly powered to the iMac. The iMac is a lovely machine (I have one in the office) but the MBP is my mobile and compact edit of choice…
Will there be newer ones out by summer 2010? Probably, maybe, who knows? If there is, get a good deal on the last generation, and save a bundle. If you’re UK based, I just saved £500 on a last-gen 17″ MBP, that is every bit as good as the newer ones, with a fractionally slower processor. In the UK, I use Jigsaw24 – keep an eye out for deals there. Don’t pay a premium for the latest and greatest – A two year old MBP will likely do everything you will want and more.

ah, thanks for the advice. I’ve already got an external HD, but tbh i’m not sure I’d be storing masses of data on it anyway (I know video takes a lot of room).
I don’t particularly need a huge screen, even the largest MBP ones are still smaller than the smallest iMac. I’m still stuck on portability – I’m not entirely sure if I’d use ot, but then again it would be so handy for trips if I’m going to be in another part of the country for a week and I have college work to do.
I’ll have a think about it…
