Not to drag this thread totally off-topic, I tried a ‘share’ export to iPhone for a 2 minute sequence I wanted to show someone. I gave up after 10 minutes – it said the export would take 45 mins. The sequence was 1080i50.
The same export using quick time conversion (iPhone preset) took 4 mins.
This was on an Octo-core 3.0 Mac Pro.

Don’t have a solution to the sync issue (maybe a delay in the wireless sender, or a location mixer, or the audio delay caused by a boom situated some distance away – although I’ve never seen any of this occur) but if you have sound from a boom and a lav, surely it isn’t stereo – it’s dual mono. If you capture it as such, you can slip the sound in sync. If you have accidentally linked it as stereo on capture, then un-link it (Alt-L I think) and slip one track to fix the issue. You will also have to set the pans back as appropriate.
Hope that helps.

I would never recommend any backups to a device without server-grade drives (which the time capsule lacks anyway) although it’s interesting to hear it’s not a drive issue in many cases.
I would also never use a single drive device to backup anything I earn a living off – that’s what mirrored or RAID 5 storage is for.
Apple’s airport and associated devices always seemed to me to be overpriced, over-designed items. It seems the latter has been the (literal) death of it.

Compressor.
Or, if you have a hardware video card that downconverts, like the BM or Kona cards, you could use that – assuming you have a DV deck with an SDI input (a iittle less likely).
You will find all the scaling and quality options you want in Compressor.

You may find the answer here:
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/986233#986300
I found it with a quick search of the forum – there are also a lot of other replies about this I have not yet read, but this thread has a link to an article on correct P2 importing.

The autosave vault is usually set up to keep a maximum number of saves, so it will likely have deleted the older saves. Nice idea though – I’m guessing the OP has been working on this for a while…
As far as I know, it’s the only possible way of checking this – perhaps if you use Time Machine to back up project files?

The visually lossless, 10-bit compressed nature of ProRes makes it an absolute no-brainer, especially if you plan on upgrading to HD anytime soon. You may like to consider that for SD work, you would see no advantage to ProRes HQ over the standard ProRes format. Another new key advantage (for 7.0 users) is the life-changing ability to render alpha-containing graphics from AE or Motion and use them unrendered in a timeline. No more animation codec renders ever. I love this more than cake.
I would caution that some shared storage solutions, like Editshare, do not support ProRes yet, and this support has caused a couple of projects I’ve been aware of recently being finished in DVCProHD (old tech IMHO).
As for space, an hour of Uncompressed 8-bit SD in PAL land is 70Gb. An hour of ProRes is 18Gb (give or take). It will also playback on smaller, cheaper storage options.
In an all FCP enviroment, I would not consider anything else.

September 28, 2009 at 11:48 pm in reply to: off topic somewhat — incorporating 3d animationWhat you are asking falls beyond the abilities of Motion. Using a combination of 3DSMAX and After effects (with some 3D tracking sofware like PFHOE) you might get where you want – but none of this is easy. Find a 3D artist, and farm this out…

Hi Olof
I’ve no experience with M100 – it sounds like it does some things better than FCP.
However, with the correct RT settings in FCP, you will get real time dissolves, CC and some effects – or playback with slightly reduced resolution if it’s a mix of too many effects. I find many users do not set RT up correctly – but it should be noted that often using an external video device effects the RT performance (ask anyone editing RED timelines with BM hardware).
I have to agree, however, that we seem to have been waiting far too long for better performance – how many pro users would pay for hardware acceleration in FCP? Working in HD in time-sensitive environments, I know I would. If there is a market for the Kona 3, there is a market for something that works to improve a situation I frankly thought Apple would have solved in software/multicore hardware by now. I would pay for that – and so would many others.

Are you seeing the freeze in the viewer window or on an external monitor? If it’s on the monitor, via a video playback/capture card, you may have the wrong video output settings.
Can you be clearer about what you are seeing – and where you see the timecode run? Are you saying there is burnt-in timecode on the video, and you are seeing this run, but not the video?
