    Hi folks
Currently looking at our codecs for media aquisition. We’ve been using PAL 8bit uncompressed for over 5 years now to capture mainly from BetaSP tape and always found it very stable but large. As we look towards creating a digital library in the near future it’s important that we continue to work at high quality, as we are editing for broadcast, but wondered if one of the newer codecs prehaps used less drive space…?

What codec do you use? And how do you think it compares to 8bit uncompressed?

    Many thanks in anticipation!

ProRes whenever possible. Requires v6 or later.

    All the best,

The visually lossless, 10-bit compressed nature of ProRes makes it an absolute no-brainer, especially if you plan on upgrading to HD anytime soon. You may like to consider that for SD work, you would see no advantage to ProRes HQ over the standard ProRes format. Another new key advantage (for 7.0 users) is the life-changing ability to render alpha-containing graphics from AE or Motion and use them unrendered in a timeline. No more animation codec renders ever. I love this more than cake.

I would caution that some shared storage solutions, like Editshare, do not support ProRes yet, and this support has caused a couple of projects I’ve been aware of recently being finished in DVCProHD (old tech IMHO).

As for space, an hour of Uncompressed 8-bit SD in PAL land is 70Gb. An hour of ProRes is 18Gb (give or take). It will also playback on smaller, cheaper storage options.

In an all FCP enviroment, I would not consider anything else.

Prores – but only if you’re mostly Intel. Our last remaining G5 tends to chug a bit when using it. But if you’re mostly Mac Pros then Prores is really a no-brainer.

ProRes…for both HD and SD. 10-bit, smal files…well, smaller.

    Hi Guys

We were considering Pro Res as an option so thats great to see others have also gone that route!!!
We film a lot of multicamera outside broadcasts and thought the AJA Ki Pro looked an interesting alternative to tape….?

Thanks for your comments – very helpful!
